Monitors on a budget

Post by adgallant » Mon Oct 04, 2004 2:14 pm

Hi all, I'm a new user looking into getting some budjet monitors for my home studio. I figured instead of putting a grand into a decent pair of speakers, I would devide my costs up between acoustic treatments and powered monitors. I'm now down to looking for something around 500$ canadian, and my remaining 500$ is going to treating my control room. Any suggestions or references to previous posts?

I have some M-Audio SP-5b's that I think are great for the money. Picked mine up for a little under $300. I've considered in the future getting some genelecs but I'm not in a huge hurry, because I've been pretty happy with the mixes I get out of these...

I have a pair of SP-5Bs for sale right now for $130 shipped. There'sa description in the Buy/Sell/trade. Or you can PM me.

They are good monitors for a small set up. I have used them and liked them.

Yorkville YSM1P's. They go down to 35hz, clean punchy presentation, have trim pots, cost a little over 400 bucks U.S......and they are (well) made in Canada! I am VERY happy with mine and recommend them highly in this price range. Google them extensively and you will at least SEE what the audio world says about them. Hearing is up to you. Best of luck with your final decision! ---LT

I've read about the Carvin ones, and they seem pretty good for the money. I may get some. I've heard their like NS-10's but with better bass response. You can get a set for 450 or so. I think I still get half off Carvin, so I better freaking snag a pair :)

i was recently turned on to the B&W DM602 S3 and went out and got a pair immediately. they have to be the best value-to-performace speaker out there. they run about $600 american, plus you need an amp. if you can wait to save up a little more, it is absolutely worth it. it is such a drastic improvement over the Mackie HR824's it ain't even funny, i couldn't get rid of them fast enough.

i'm also a fan of the tannoy reveals. they do this amazing midrange thing - great if you do a lot of guitar work.

that's the combo I have... and I love it. I don't know what it is about the Hafler/Tannoy combo but it's a really good match.

the Event tuned reference monitors are worth checking out too. i think you can get a pair of TR-8s for aboot $500 CAN. If not, the TR-6 will definitely be aboot that price.

Heh, thanks to everyone for the replies. I've definatly been looking into the TR8s, they've been at the top of my list for a while. I'm also contacting a canadian dealer for the dimond 8.2s.
cheers,
adam
