that crazy fender vibrato, in a pedal???

Post by cashed checks » Fri Oct 08, 2004 11:55 am

i've been on the hunt for a Fender and was leaning towards a Vibrolux or possibly a 65 Super Reverb until i fell in love with the 59 Bassman 4x10 combo reissue. This thing is totally 'no frills' and i was looking forward to some of that awesome fender vibrato.

I'm not a gear freak when it comes to guitar stuff and haven't a clue as to whether a pedal can come close. Any ideas?

you may want to check out the Frantone Vibutron Vibrato at a botique store near you...

couldn't agree more on the '59 bassman 4x10 combo -- it's an amazing piece of work. are you getting the newly re-reissued version with the lacquered tweed?
medicate? oh, i thought you said "meditate."

I personally like the Fulltone SupaTrem the best.

Definitely try out whatever pedal first... many tremelo pedals make a clicking sound- check out the Harmony Central database for specific models.

I like the Dunlop Tremelo pedal, cause it is stereo, and it can PAN left to right if you have two amps, which is something you don't see people doing with a pedal very often.....

I haven't heard them, but the Mint Green Mini Vibe or the Saffron Yello Tremelo built by BJF look promising. Not cheap (see Musictoyz.com) though.

Demeter Tremulator. It is modeled after the early Fender tremolo, and it sounds phenomenal. I've also heard good things about the $20 Danelectro Tuna Melt.

I'll second the Frantone Tremulator. Really great sound and very versatile. I sold our Demeter after getting the Frantone.

after doing some checking around the web i've narrowed it down to the demeter and the frantone, time to audition them. i'll probably just order both and send one back. thanks all!

It depends on which era/circuit of Fender vibrato/tremolo you're looking for. All the ones mentioned are great boxes for versatile tremolo (from buttery sine wave stuff like some Brownface amps, to choppier trems like on later Blackface amps)

The one thing that none that I've tried (and I haven't tried the Frantone or the BJF boxes) can do is the Brownface pitchy vibrato. The best pedal for that sound is the King Trem. It's a huge and expensive box, but it has a luscious warbly trem that sounds very amp-like.

Expensive: Demeter
Mid-price: Boss
Cheap: Danelectro

All of the above are usable, it just depends whether you wanna spend $250, $75, or $25. I went with the Boss, but I'm looking for a Peavey Valverb. No longer in production, but it's a TUBE tremolo and reveb unit in a single rack space.

I read somewhere that Bo Diddley invented this effect using a clock. I don't know if it's true.

Whoa... I listened to a demo of that King Trem pedal by Aurolux - thats exactly what I need! Phasey vibrato - NOT tremelo. Univibe clones are not subtle enough. Any other recommendations for that type of pedal? Whats that Demeter all about?

Honestly, I'm a tremolo/vibrato freak, and I've found nothing else that does that phasey vibrato like the King Trem. There are other things that are close, including the Univibe set for a less intense effect, but nothing like the King Trem.

The closest I've come is the vibrato in a Vox or Kustom or Magnatone amp.

Tuna Melt. It was good enough for Adam Levy (Norah Jones)
