Outboard mic pre chains

Post by texlop » Fri Oct 08, 2004 11:58 pm

For those with outboard mic pres, how do you find you get the best sound?

insert Mic input in mic pre then to line in the mixer

or Mic input in the mixer then patch into mic pre then into recorder or audio interface.

I don't think to many of you do the second choice. I was just wondering what you guys did to acheive(in deep Darth Vader voice) "The Ultimate Sound".

I have:
(2)ART TPS II
(1)Behringer Ultragain Pro
Mackie 1604VLZPro which is (16) Mic Pres

Let me know what you think.
For some good new music check out The Medusas

Maybe I'm a little inconventional in my approach but I actually insert my tube pre in the Aux Bus.

Mic>Mixer Pre's>Soundcard

I like the pre's on my mixer but they can be a little cold sometimes so I'll blend in my tube pre through an Aux Bus and use the best of both worlds.

I've recently been using the Mackie preamps in my 1402 instead of an ART TPS I've got. That was a suggestion someone here made, and I really can't hear a huge difference. Kinda like the Mackie more, but that's cause I'm a succker for BIG, VISIBLE meters.

My two cents...

here's a related question.

say you have a pre that sounds real nice but doesn't have enough gain. do you use it anyway and then run it into a second mic pre or line amp for a few more dBs?

into a line amp or a distressor on 1:1, and use a little make up gain.

i, too, usually track mic>pre>tape, compression if necessary...

I know, I know I don't have the package perse I just want to know how the big boys do it though.

But at least I'm trying though we all gotta start somewhere, how else will I know that my Nave Pre in the future will kick my art preamp's ass if I don't start with crap and move on up.

go mic, pre, then straight in .... less signal loss!!!! Also... depending on how many pres you really need to use at once... you can find some REALLY decent pre's on the market right now.... ebay, used gear at stores, and word of mouth... I've seen single channel avalon's out there for 500-600 dollars, you just gotta find them!!!!!! :) but what you have right now is fine for starting off...... it's better than alot of other people have!!!!!

To the individual that did the laughing: Laugh if you wish, but it is the set of ears (and the hear) behind the console that makes the recording, not the GEAR.
To Texlop: You rock out, more power to you.
