Bass drum converter kit

Post by LeedyGuy » Mon Oct 11, 2004 6:29 am

I have a great floor tom that i converted to a bass drum. its a 16" yamaha recording custom tom with a birch shell from the 80's. i put an evans coated G2 on the batter side and an evans Resonance head on the resonant head side. i taped some paper towels to the batter head and voila! kick drum. sounds like your hitting a resonant piece of paper or something...its hot. i recorded a whole small kit with a beta 57 through a ts9 overdrive pedal and it sounded REALLY cool.

the problem? it slides all over the goddamn place. im having trouble recording it because it moves! yikes! i cant close mic it to maximize the low end of it and its maddening. anyone know of a conversion kit they have actually used and like? one that will hopefully just attach to the lugs somehow and give me a plate to screw the kick drum onto?

A much cheaper option would be something my roommate recently purchased.

I don't really know how to describe it, but it's a dual-spur-like piece of metal that clamps onto the resonant rim of the bass drum (or converted floor tom in your case.) The two spurs are sharp at the ends and can be adjusted to dig into the carpet/floor, preventing unwanted movement.

Of course, if you have good hardwood, you probably won't want to damage it with these, so a small area rug would be a good idea as well.

Also, most decent kick drum pedals feature metal spurs that you can screw down into carpet to prevent slipping.

These methods, combined with the balance given to the drum by attaching the pedal might be enough to keep things stable.

I bought that DW thing. I didn't really want to go with the spurs...i want a real converter. i'll let everyone know how this thing works out.
