New off-the-wall blues bands?

Post by stillafool » Thu Oct 14, 2004 11:48 am

I hear some pretty cool music on the college radio every once in a while -- wierd bluesy, rootsy music that doesn't seem to care too much about commercial appeal, and sounds alot different from the worn-out 12 bar monotony that I hear in some clubs. I never get the names of the bands, usually because I'm half asleep when I hear it. Does anyone know of any bands that are into this, and records I should check out?

This stuff has been out a while, but-

R.L. Burnside, A Ass Pocket of Whiskey
R.L. Burnside, Mr. Wizard
Juinor Kinbrough

I'd like to hear more stuff like this, too.

How about T-Model Ford's Junior Get Your Gun?

He's a badass old muthafu**a. His stuff is more droney, like John Lee Hooker, than 12-bar-clubby.

I'll check him out. I love it when they stay on the tonic chord the whole song, like Howlin' Wolf in Wang Dang Doodle, or those old Fred McDowell records (shake 'em on down). It's kind of ironic that staying on one chord actually makes alot of blues sound less monotonous.

My new favorite is Jerry Mccain. Recorded for Excello. There's a cd called "That's what they want" the best of Jerry Mccain. It has the Excello singles and eleven songs he recorded in his living room in 1954 or 1955. Totally raw, primitive crazy rocknroll blues. You have to hear it to believe it. Makes modern garage punk sound like Herman's Hermits. Google it and you can find a few soundclips. "Geronimo Rock", "Next Door Neighbor", "I'm a Ding Dong Daddy From a Rock And Roll City." This shit is priceless. Just noticed this thread is NEW blues bands. In that case, Black Keys, Pearlene, the Oblivians (not realy new, just newer), North Mississippi All Stars (only the first cd), Jimbo Mathus, my new un-named-yet-to-rehearse band...
I'm a drinking man with a guitar problem.

Califone (check out the predecessor, Red, Red Meat, also)

Grandpaboy: Deadman's Shake (Paul Westerberg)

Mark Lanegan (now Mark Lanegan Band; former Screaming Trees singer, works with QOTSA - very cool take on folk and blooze)

More commercial: Govt. Mule is outstanding musicianship in a bluesy Southern rockish sort of vein, and jazzy and jammy at times.

I was about to recommend The Black Keys but it seems gravy boat beat me to it. Not bad for a two-piece band.

Try Paul "Wine" Jones.
"There's nothing noble in being better than your fellow man. True nobility comes from being better than your former self." Or something like that.

Thanks for all the bands. I went out and bought a black keys cd. The guitar player's tone and vocals reminds me alot of Clapton in Cream on the first couple of albums -- definitely has that vibe (except the drummer isn't as good as Ginger Baker). I love the dude's vocals, too. I've heard Govt Mule -- they're more southern soporific meathead bluesrock than the off-the-wall shit I like. But I'll definitely check out all this stuff, so thanks.

i was blown away by buddy guy's 'sweet tea' disc from 2001. heavy, drony at times and just smokin' voodoo-blues like. trance inducing for sure.
