Overdrive Pedals

Post by Gregorio Cortez » Wed Jul 23, 2003 8:42 am

I have a Guild Manhattan, playing through a Voodoo Labs Boss Tone pedal and a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. Does anyone have any suggestions for overdrive. THanks

Hold Off Haters, check out the Line 6 DM4 distortion modeler. I've owned tons of fuzz, distortion and overdrive pedals and I think it's great! Plus you ge them cheap used because most people aren't into them.

If all else fails check out the Real Tube, if it's good enough for Billy Gibbons it's good enough!!!

If you want REAL overdrive, get a clean boost pedal. It ups the input gain about 20dB. Sunn amps love this, my Carvin hates it. Marshalls probably love it, Fenders I'm not sure about. Just get one and see. :D I use a Crews A/B pedal with a built in boost and effects loop. Handy bastard.

I got poo-poohed for this a few weeks ago, but I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the Zoom PD-01 Power Driver, on closeout at Sam Ash for sixty bucks right now. Also excellent is the Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive and (really!) the DOD Juice Box, which you can get real cheap on eBay.

Thanks for all the info... I guess I'll remain a bit confused until I try some of these suggestions out myself.

I'm personally a big fan of both the Tube Screamer (midrange bump and all) and the Tube Works Real Tube (the black one with 5 knobs).

I second the vote for the Vox Valvetone. It's exactly the pedal I needed between my Tele and my Hot Rod Deville. It puts out a nice creamy, sparkly overdrive, and adjusted correctly can make your setup sound kind of Dave Davies-esque ... if you're into that kind of thing.

The only trick is that it's out of production, so getting one can be tough. I found mine on ebay, and paid a little too much, but I've been really happy with the sounds I've gotten from it.

the reverend drivetrain pedal (II) is pretty good, too. after distortion or fuzz it gives your tone an instant stoner doom vibe...

Gregorio,

Is there a specific type of overdrive you're looking for? Reference points might bring this discussion a little more into focus.

i'm a big fan of my tube screamer, th emidrange can be a bit much, but i keep the tone and the gain all the way down to help minimize that, then crank the volume to just give a nice boost.

i also have the mxr micro-amp, which is just a straight gain pedal, which i like, but it does drive some amps a bit crazy, and i find it can make low end a little out of control on amps too, which is nice about the tube screamer, i feel it cleans up the low end nicely.

meanwhile, i really want to try a fulltone fulldrive.......

Hey Gregorio,
I thought my tone really exploded when I got a compressor pedal in front of my distortion. I have a TS9 (with 808 mod)...and yes, I think it sounds much smoother...cost me like $5, best five bucks I've spent btw..
I got a "bi-compressor" from Analog Mike. Absolutely the best pedal I've ever owned period. This thing has two compressors, one smooth, the other a rip-roaring top fuel funny-car. Incredibly versatile, can dial up any tone.
Anyway, man my tone really came alive with this thing...its definitely the bomb the shit the can the possum....whatever....its really nice. That'll give you the OD your looking for....
I also agree that the Fulltone is a great pedal.
good luck,
Mark
