New! Tube Trap DIY project website

Post by Dyno » Mon Oct 25, 2004 6:04 pm

Hey Guys,

I just spent the weekend putting together a DIY Tube Trap webpage. It covers in detail the construction of 10" wall hung half rounds, perfect for control or live room absorbtion.

Check it out: http://www.dougploss.com/tubetrap_diy.htm

Have fun,

I got a "404" error when I clicked on the link.

But this worked.

Really nice project. I like the mounting system. Adjusting the room sound sounds like a great feature.

wow, this is brilliant. i have immediately began installing these in all rooms after great success in my drum room... They are so simple to build. affordable acoustic treatment is so long overdue. so often, the "subistitutes" to expensive treatment really fall behind especially at low freqs. With these i find myself removing sound treatment that cost me thousands of dollars for the half tube method. I strongly recommend adapting the rooms in a modular way so that it can be adjusted for different needs.

Hey, these look pretty cool. Have you done any RTA tests with them in your room?

How much does a finished trap weigh? These would be prefect to mount in the peak of my ceiling in my live room, but if they're too heavy it wont happen (as easily).

How did you mount them in th corners?

thanks,
mike

Awesome step-by-step tutorial. That's what I need to guide me in building a Mic!

No, I haven't done an RTA yet. I did all the calculations for my rooms using absorbtion coeficients. The 10" x4ft half rounds are really light, 6 lbs. to be exact. I pin nailed the edges of the quarter rounds into the corners. You could also velcro them in.

hope this helps,

Does the fabric choice affect the sound? Can I use anything or is the fire retardant material necessary?

The choice of fabric won't effect the trap, but I'd stay with a commercial type coarse woven fabric. I think it only needs to be fireproof if you have a commercial facility and local code requires it.

I purchased the pipe insulation at Means co. in Boise. Their info is at the bottom of the dyi page. You should be able to get the insulation in most large areas where industrial pipe is sold. It's a fairly common industrial product.

Look pretty neat to me. I'd be intersted to hear Ethan Winer chime in on this thread.
