How long do you hang on to equipment that's out of date? <

Post by Robert D. Simpson » Fri Nov 05, 2004 9:38 am

I've upgraded a lot of my equipment...
Still a ways to go, but there's so little resale in some of the old stuff I tend to keep it...
Like it's not worth letting go of...

I'm sure it's some kind of syndrome, but when stuff I paid $800 for is going on ebay for $100, I just keep it...

Where is the point you fire sale equipment?

hold on to it as long as possible. You never know, sometimes old out of date stuff gets random internet explosions. You make half your money back if you time it right.

I hang on to it until I need the shelf/storage/rack space. If it becomes a burden to put it somewhere, get rid of it. Here in NYC the spacce the crappy old consumer dat machine takes up is worth more than the unit itself!

yeah, I'm waiting for this mac 9600 to become vintage cool...

seriously though. there's a point where storing something becomes more of a pain than waiting to get around to needing/using it again.

although I'm not to that point yet...

I keep telling myself I need to archive a bunch of 4-track cassettes and then get rid of my fourtrack. then the 002 power supply craps out, and I start thinking about how useful that thing could actually be. although I do have two of them. and i never use em. but I'd get so little for them used, I just hang onto them....

some people have more packrat in them than others....

so to answer your question--- i hold onto the stuff.

I hold on to stuff too. I have a 100 year old upright bass that is hopelessly obsolete...

Actually, I still have a MidiVerb II in a rack, my very first reverb back in the 80s, maybe early 90s. It has a huge "reverse reverb" that's occasionally useful and is quick to dial up. But I mostly use an Ecoplate III and an Orban spring reverb which are both way more obsolete than the MidiVerb II.

My rule, and this applies to clothes, equipment, and music recordings :

If I haven't thought about it in two years, then dump it.

I love my original Microverb and think it may be the oldest piece of equipment I still own and use (maybe there is a 58 somewhere that has outlived it).

I always regret when I sell my stuff off. CD's, Mics, Instruments, whatever...
It's painful to store this stuff, but I always eventually regret it when I let it go.

uh, about the s612... I'm interested. :(

I've had two already but they're so much fun... I bet you have the disk drive too, right?
Are there any bare surfaces in your house, such as tabletops or shelves? Those need to be filled with effects right away.

We felt that way about our pre-midi 808 that tony has owned since it was new....

Now people freak out about it.

Maybe our emaxx will follow in 10 years.....

I just sold my Akai S2000. In fact, I've been on a gear-clearing spree. Just recently got rid of some guitars, a pair of MC012's (I've got another pair...I never used the second pair), a TEAC mixer....and some other shit I can't even remember right now. Oh yeah, I had to give my wurli to good will...nobody would even take it for free! I'm hanging on to my 424, and the rest of my shit, too. Since I'm planning to be in an intensive school program for a couple of years, I expect the gear world to be pretty different when I return to recording in .....2010. My PT system will be hopelessly outdated, I'm sure. But the rest of my gear will still make me happy.

PS: I use a NanoVerb as one of my outboard reverbs...and in some applications, it's just perfect. No shame in the game.
