Re: M88 VS RE20
i have a RE20; it is by far one of the best dynamic mics i have
i whish i could use a m88 for a day and a/b it but, i don't know any one that has one
i got my RE20 for $150 (CHEAP)
if you get a good price on either buy it
this is just my opinion

Re: M88 VS RE20
I prefer the RE-20 on bass cabinets and the M-88 on kick. The RE-20 has no proximity effect while the the M-88 (a hypercardiod) a very strong one. The RE-20 is probably the more flexible of the 2 mics. It is cleaner, flatter, and more "ld condenser-like" than most dynamic mics while the M-88 is darker and "beefier" than most dynamics. Do some searches- there is plenty of info out there on these two mics.

I gravitate toward an AKG D112 on bass cabinets or a Neumann U47 fet.
On kick, I'll always combine a Shure Beta 52 with a Neumann U47 fet.

I also use the FET47 for these jobs, but for live, I would just get an RE20. It will last better than an m88.
I really like both, but strictly for live sound applications I would get the RE20.

Re: M88 VS RE20
I use both the RE20 and M88 on just about every session. I actually just tracked live vocals today with the M88 and replaced them with an RE20 which suited the singer much better. Just goes to show that they are not interchangable. Both are very good at what they do. The description up top seems to be in line with my thoughts about their sound. Beyer, however, make what I would consider the best live sound mics around. The rejection on the M88, M201, M160 and M500 are fantastic. I use the 88 and 201's on close mics on drums all the time because they pick up so little of what is around them, and the stuff that leaks in is very natural. It's usually the case that if I look at tom tracks recorded with beyer mics, there's that low level signal, and then boom! The tom is a big spike. If I look at tracks recorded with 421's and RE20, the background stuff is way higher, and sounds a little less natural. When those toms do come in, whoa mama. That's why they're a standard. The M88, however, can be real hit or miss on certain stuff, but I've come across very few mics that have the amount of great rejection that thing has. I used one on a upright bass with drums in the same room, and the drums that leaked in to the mic was a little tap-tap waaay down there. The proximity really helped out, too. So, I would say for studio, RE20 might be better, for live, M88 would probably be better. My 2 centz.

I have both and I tend to use the RE-20 more for bass and kick than I do with the M-88. I do like the M-88 on electric guitar amps!

Try an M88 on snare sometime, I've found it to be a unique and interesting sound. And say goodbye to Mr. high hat...
