Wiring a shure Green Bullet?

Post by hammertime » Sat Nov 13, 2004 9:29 am

I'm switching this mic back from using a balanced xlr plug, to a 1/4 unbalanced so I can go through my amp. I did the wiring that the manual told me to inside the capsule. Now I have three wires to attach to a T/S 1/4 '' plug, a black and red wire, and a ground. The manual says the black and red wires are high and low impedance respectively. I'm using the mic to plug into a guitar amp. Do I solder both the red and black wires together and attach them to the tip of the plug? Do I leave one of them unconnected? I'm a bit confused.

Looks like it would be:

Red > Tip
Gray > Sleeve
Black > Unconnected

Shure 520 Manual

Actually, if you're going straight into an amp, you may want to connect it for high impedance. In that case, reverse rr's instructions for red and black above. You may want to try both settings with the connections made loosely before you solder to decide what sounds better for your amp. Or, better yet, hook up an on/on impedance switch with the middle terminal connected to tip, one side connected to red and the other side to black. That way you can have high Z for the amp and low Z if you want to use it to record.

According to the manual I linked above, it's the red lead that is the high impedance lead. But I agree, it would be cool (and simple) to hook up a switch so that you have your choice.

Cool. I didn't check your link...I was just going by what Hammertime said in the original post.

Don't most pre's, e.g., the one's on a mackie or on an mbox, let you do both?
