Post by slyon » Sat Nov 13, 2004 7:35 pm

I'm looking for suggestions for quality mixing headphones.

Thanks...

All together now, this time with soul...
I get satisfaction of three kinds. One is creating something, one is being paid for it and one is the feeling that I haven?t just been sitting on my ass all afternoon.

Good one.

Alright, I'll take the bait. Here goes: It's a really bad idea to mix with headphones. There. I said it.

Now, when I mix with headphones I really like the Audio-Technica ATH-M30. These sound great for the price.

Actually, I do use headphones for setting compression and gating on the kick drum and for fine tuning reverb. Does that make me a bad person?

I don't think it's bad to use them as a second reference.

I'm still not sure what UTFSF is. Guess I'm still a noob.

i'd have to go with the sony mdr 7506 also, they are really comfortable and sound great too. i'll use them to check my mixes and all that.

I mix everything with headphones. Of course I reference them to a set of speakers (My car) I still get a very good sound believe it or not. I have an album that sells in stores.
My headphones of choise have been Sennheisers 580's. Great headphones.

Good luck

I'll second the "you should not mix in headphones". However, I'll third the 7506's. I love em, but watch out, the low end is really "extended"

I've been mixing on my laptop all fall with a combination of Sony 7506 and AKG 240M. When I think it's in the ball park I start checking on any set of speakers I can get access to. Anything. I would not recommend either of these as a sole reference but they complement eachother nicely. I don't think it's a bad idea to mix on headphones as long as you do plenty of double checking on speakers that aren't so close to your brain.

Speakers are my headphones! :)

Ok. All joking aside, I like 7506's if you're cautious that they're a little hyped at the extremes...

But I just don't recommend mixing on 'phones unless your surroundings demand it. As a second reference in addition to speakers, well, yeah, go for it. :)

(By the way, just like having several sets of speakers to cross-reference, I really like Hoof's recommendation of different cans to cross-check mixes with if you must mix with them...)
