good 500$ monitors?
hoping to get some active monitors in the 500-600$ a pair range cause thats all i can spend... any suggestions on brands you like or dislike in this range. do you go with the ones that have the broadest hz-khz or are there brands that just sound better despite their specs? thanks

M-Audio BX8's are nice, but RTFM... Many people I know have them set up improperly and then complain about the low end...
Wharfedale Pro Diamond 8.2 Actives should be on the short list also... Those and a decent sub will run you less than $600...

Re: good 500$ monitors?
Start with your Acoustic Space switch at (-4?) and go from there. Not the other way around (which is why they tend to sound anemic at "0").
Without carefully reading the manual, many assume that the A.S. switch is a low shelf - It's actually an "everything else" shelf.
And let them burn in - 40 hours or so - The lows are very tight (TOO tight) right out of the box.

Would you recommend the actives over the passives and a decent amp? How are the amps in the actives?MASSIVE Mastering wrote:Wharfedale Pro Diamond 8.2 Actives should be on the short list also... Those and a decent sub will run you less than $600...
Any recommendations on a sub?
Sorry if I'm hijacking but I think these questions may help others too!

I almost always reccomend passives if you've got a good amp -
On the sub - Anything from a mild-mannered Sony to a more robust Velodyne (around $250 for the VX series) would do fine along with those.

Re: good 500$ monitors?
thanks for the advice. what i've been using is absolutely the worst early- eighties hand-me-down stereo so i can't wait to upgrade to the best i can afford right now. i'll look into both of your reccomendations. cheers.

I'll second the M-Audio line - I have a pair of BX5s I use remotely, and they haven't let me down. They're surprisingly detailed and unforgiving, but it's been said - the switches on the back are everything. I'll ALWAYS use a reference CD to figure out what I'm hearing before I start working. 10 minutes of mussing about with the switches, and I've got something. Good product.
I'm in for your mom and I'll pay.

check out this thread about the wharfedales. i have a pair of the diamond pro active 8.2's and love them. after some burn in time, they've blossomed, if monitors can actually blossom. anyway, check it.

Re: good 500$ monitors?
Event TR8 powered monitors... they're awesome, and usually sell for about $400 used, $500 new.
Re: good 500$ monitors?
I'll say it again (I think everyone's ignoring me), but I put the Event TR8s up against the Behringer Truth b2031a, mostly to hear the Events against something I knew would be crappy, and liked the Behrries A LOT more. I bought 'em and brought 'em home and I have been really happy with them. Maybe I'm crazy, but I like them better the the Mackie 824s I mixed my last record on. Honest.

Re: good 500$ monitors?
I went through a similar experience about 2 years ago. I ended up with the NHT Pro A-10 (little brother to the A-20), which are discontinued. If you can find a pair (with included power amp) they are great. They blew away anything I heard in the price range. I would be interested in getting a sub...how would you do that with active monitors?
