Isolation and daisy chaining

Post by UnlikeKurt » Sat Nov 20, 2004 7:48 pm

Hey all.
Here's the question. I have a session coming up in my home studio and i just realized my instrument cables definately do not reach from the isolation areas to the live room (about 60ft). Is it ok to just daisy chain some instrument cables together with couplers? Or is this definately not cool due to signal loss and degeneration?
If that is ok to do, should they be trs, or unbalanced (as the cables are) and should the couplers be shielded (i'd imagine)?
Also, if this is frowned upon, is it ok to do as far as the footswitches are concerned?
thanks
james

Try it out and see if you can hear a difference.

Do what you need to do to make the session enjoyable for everyone.
Get the sounds you want, and make the bnd feel good about what s happening.
People remember that more than if you had to plug two mic cables together....

At 60 feet, it seems like it'd be a good idea to get a few DI boxes and an XLR snake. I suspect y'r gonna have some hella line hum otherwise.

But like the man said, try it out. If you don't, don't bother, if you do... Try something else.

Be prepared either way.

To "try it" doesn't mean "don't worry about it enough to have a backup plan if there's too much hum, etc." It's best to not sweat anything during a session if you can help it (or at least not have your clients sweat), but it's your job to make sure that everything works in a manner that wastes the least amount of time for your clients.

Being prepared is largely what determines your clients' experiences with you.

That having been said, 60ft is a long way to go for unbalanced instrument cables. You generally lose more in your connections than you do with cable length (for example, three 5-foot cables coupled tends to lose more than one 20-foot cable), but 60 ft. is just asking for signal loss and RF interferrence. Coupling cables to achieve 60 feet of length without some sort of buffer just seems like the worst scenario, aside from having no signal at all.

My "try it out" advice was meant to be done BEFORE the session, of course..

You'd be amazed at how many people don't.

See, i definately understand all of this. I just wasn't sure if using say a di box was going to be alright instead of somethign like one of them fancy line driver devices.
As for the footswitches though. Does that matter? Can they not be just plain old coupled lines?
thanks for the ideas fellas
