Most ANNOYING drum sound?

Post by Seventh Wave Studio » Sun Nov 21, 2004 2:26 pm

Dave Matthews. I HATE it. So cheesy. My girlfriend listens to it all weekend, and I swear I threw up in my mouth a little.

What's yours??

I've always hated alot of the 80's drum snares, but after getting into Depeche Mode, I've adapted.

I had a very heavy metal band in this weekend. Working with them made me go back and listen to some of my metal records that I haven't heard in ages. I was listening to Pantera's "Far Beyond Driven" and I have to say, those are some pretty bad and annoying sounding drums. In fact, the whole record sounds pretty thin. And I remember it sounding much better 12 years ago. I guess everything sounds better when you're 17 and stoned.

Those cats never let go of that gated reverb, did they....

yeah. basically all of pantera's albums have that 'signature' drum sound of theirs. that sound is essential to them just as if it was a member of the band! i believe the drummer is the band's engineer and possibly producer for all their discs, hence that sound. i suspect its triggered samples too, likely created custom-wise by the drummer and reused constantly...

Is that really the drum sound making you throw up, or is it everything else?

Metallica - St. Anger

worst drum sound ever. No lie, when I first heard that track I thought it was like a joking-intro type pop thing. Hell, have you heard the tribute?! ITS GENIOUS! look for it

I was also never too fond of the Doors drum sounds

The fly on the wall ACDC album has absolutely horrible drums and vocal recording also (as a comparison, listen to the Back in Black album, which was awesome)

most live recordings of r&b artists kill me. it usually ends up being bright ass cymbals and the revenge of the 8 inch tom.

anything by Hugh Padgham, inventor of the 'phil collins' sound - massively overgated snares make my ears prick up on every beat. never get used to that.

Sorr if this is one of your favs, but the snare sound in Born in the USA drives me insane.
...most of that 80s Def Leppard HUGE silky reverb crap too. Unlistenable....well, I guess it would still be unlistenable even if, say Albini had done the drums, right?

The only true great mic on this planet is the Shure SM-57. It is the most consistant in not totally sucking of anything ever built. All other mics are "application dependant".

What's so wrong with DMB? I kinda like 'em! And Carter Beauford is an incredible drummer. Is there anyone on here who actually LIKES Dave Mathews? I guess not...
When in doubt, try it anyway... it just might work.

I gotta call you on the "anything" part. I think the drum sounds on "Synchronicity" are pretty badass.
