Audio Technica AT2020

Post by flanneljammies » Wed Dec 01, 2004 6:39 am

So I got the new glossy tome-like Sweetwater catalog yesterday and noticed a new (to me anyway) AT2020 mic. It's a $99 LDC. I know most everyone regards AT pretty highly and I'm wondering if anyone has checked out this new model. At this price point, how does it compare to the Studio Projects B1?

Interesting. Haven't heard it (or even heard of it). Doesn't look to be a LDC though, the diaphragm is only 16mm. More of an MDC.

What's the size cutoff for a LDC? Or rather, what are the typical SDC and LDC sizes?

At 20db does it seem kinda noisy? Am I misreading the specs? Seems like an AT version of one of the MXL sdc's.

Small = approx. 1/2" or about 10-12mm
Medium = approx. 3/4" or about 16-20mm
Large = approx. 1" or about 24-28mm

Just got my Sweetwater catalog today and am intrigued. Anyone try this 2020 out yet? I don't own any AT mics... Anyone really dig the 3035? Don't think I'll have the dough for anything more expensive for a few months..

I was wondering about that one too.

I own a 3035, and I love it. It's nothing real special, but for the money you can't beat it. I hope someone tries out the 2020 soon so I can hear about it. (too poor to get one myself right now)

My AT rep is pretty pissed over this mic. More cheap chinese crap that will drive the costs of mics down. Not that AT is crap, I own them myself.

Sometimes I just get these subliminal feelings about gear I hear about, no rational rhyme or reason, and maybe that's not the most scientific way to live, but I looked at this ad in the Sweetwater catalog and just... kinda... shook my head, thinking, "$99, is someone trying to fool me into something or what?"

Just got them in stock at my store. I'll crack one open soon and see how well this "Price Point" microphone sounds.

You can hear (and see) a review of the AT2020 at tyford.com. Just click on Review Archive, then on the Quickie folder and then download AT2020.mp4.

Musicians Fiend gave me one of these and an external f/w drive for free when I bought my Presonus Firepod. The free drive is loud as hell, I hope the free at isn't!
