what's that sound on the Smiths' "Ask"?

You know the one, the "bwhoobwabhwabhwoobhwoobwhoobhowoo" thing that comes in around 1:00. It sounds kind of like maybe a vocoded keyboard/voice thing being gated by a rythm guitar?

That's the guitarist's corduroy pants Image You have to get them from a thrift store and stop bathing to get that real "swishy" vocoder sound.

Since when are corduroy pants extremely trendy? Thats like saying wearing jeans to be trendy.....tight tight jeans on the other hand.

I'm not particularly fond of corduroy pants myself. The swishy sound they make prevents any ninja-like stealth movement.

There was an article a few years ago with Johnny Marr where he said it was an harmonica going into a boombox with the "loudness" knob turned all the way up, or something like that. He was just riffing, no vocoders or gates or anything.

The thing about the harmonica is right at the end.

aw crap, these are some awesome ideas. I love tuning short-scale guitars up to F or F# - not only does it make it easy to play in weird (for the guitar, anyway) keys but also it changes the dynamics of the guitar quite a bit.

Now I'm off to find a page on open tunings, I am always interested in those... as long as it's not some DDDDEF# sonic youth crap
