Personally, I'm pretty sick of distorted backup vocals, or third verses with distorted vocals when the rest are clean.

Or how about that stutter-cut Protools edit on vocal lines, ala Linkin Park. Weak.

The "in your face" sound... and I don't just mean because of compression - I mean because everything is close mic'd and taken direct. There's no room or space to anything! I also get bugged by the lack of bass in pop and rock. Think I'm stupid if you want, but I love live recordings of concerts that have been taken in later and had studio mixing techniques and good mastering put onto them. I also like a lot of pre-70s stuff because you can actually hear the room. I guess a lot of this could stem from me being a wind player rather than a rock musician and that I started out in live sound and still primarily do that. I dunno...

When in doubt, try it anyway... it just might work.

Hey! Just out of curiosty - how come every time I post a topic or reply to a thread, nobody ever posts on it again??? Am I really that bad? Do I drive people off? Hmmm.... Just starting to notice this. Sorry if I'm really that annoying!

jesus - 31 posts and you're only now figuring out that nobody likes you? :)

everything sounds cliche to me nowadays. the one that's getting me is the overdubbing ad nausuem. a million background vocals...tamborine...piano...so i guess i should say "the everything and the kitchen sink thing"...just cuz you can doesn't mean ya should.

I struggle with this myself, there's usually a point in tracking where i'll pile on tons and tons of percussion ...luckily though, i actually listen to my stuff so most of it usually gets ditched in the end.

Don't worry, dude, the same thing happens to me. I was thinking of changing my username to "Threadkiller" for awhile there.

"I struggle with this myself"

i miss the thinking of engineering stuff like "how they hell did they do that?"
i mean you know - stuff like 8 track stuff.

now it's like - "oh - computer - unlimited tracks. right."

the last peter gabriel record's single had so many od's on it i couldn't take it!

OK see ya.

More of a songwriting thing, but indiepop songs where the chords lead the melody. Lack of craft. People who do this want badly to write cute pop songs, which is great, but when you can't actually make up a memorable melody, please don't just play 1-4-2-5 and kinda hum over it twee style and call it "songwriting".

I think this is now qualifying as a production cliche...
having the singer from Evanesscence duet with your meathead-rock band.

Also, I'd like a law passed that would ban the use of rectified Mesa Boogies coupled with whole notes and PRS's for a couple of years, just to have some time to realize how played out it's become.
