Telefunkens Rule!

Post by Shawn Simmons » Sun Dec 05, 2004 9:48 am

I recorded some drums yesterday and got to use my new (but old) Telefunken V72 mic pres. I used a Coles in an over-the-shoulder position into a V72 then into a Distressor, just barely touching the compression. That with a few other mics and we had a great drum sound. Punchy, full, smooth. Sounded amazing! Of course, the drummer was top-notch and the vintage Ludwig kit was setup great but woooeeee! Those drums were killing!

If you haven't heard or used some V72's, you're missing out.

Shawn isnt that like a "beatles-ie" chain..with the coles and 72's..I remember reading they used both those things..

in your opinion what do the v72's impart on your signal..specifically compared with a neve style transformer balanced pre ?

another awesome thing about the v72s is that they break up nicely when overdriven, as opposed to the harsher distortion sound of a solid state pre.

Yes, it WAS very "beatles-ie". That's what I was going for. I even had the drummer play like Ringo. Here was my setup:

kick > U195 > 1073
snare > C42 > 1073 > 550b
Front of kit/OH > Coles > V72 > Distressor > GML
Over the Shoulder > Coles > V72 > Distressor
Floor > MC-012 > 1272
Rack > MC-012 > 1272
Hat > 4047 > Trident

I could easily use only the shoulder track and the kick track and it would be great. I'll have to wait until I mix to make that decision.

This was one of the first real tests that I put the V72 pres through so I can't really give you an opinion other than to say they are awesome. I've also used them on backing vocals and they shined there too. I'll give you more info once I use them more. I can't wait to try them on electric guitars.

Shawn,

Those V72's do rock. Are you going to change your name to "shawn V72" now? ;)

If you like those, you would love the V76. I think the V76's might be some of the most amazing tube mic pre's ever made.

Not sure, never used a V672. I'm curious though.

Good idea. Or maybe "shawntubetapemachinetubetapeechojesus"? (pertaining to your other thread) :D

so I've got 57 going into my sound card at 16 bit, recording an Ace Percussion 3 piece in my basement.

Will that work?

Yes. The venerable V72 is a drum pre amp of doom. The Coles is an enviable combination with a Telefunken. Wow.
