Beta52?? any uses for them??

Post by burn » Wed Dec 08, 2004 6:35 am

I got a beta52 few years ago when i didn't knew much about mics, and.. everytime i try to record kick with it it sound like shit, last weekend again, sound really bad, i put a mk012 instead and the sound was SOOOO much better, i got all the low end that was missing from the 52.

Anyway, do you know good applications for the 52? (or should I sell it?) and what should I get for a good kick sound? d112? never used it but it seem to be a classic

I have used the 52 in the right kick drum. I have been uing a combo of the Sennheiser e602 and the Neumann FET47 lately.

The 52 is a great mic. You have to mess with the position and not use your eyes to set it up. I only like that mic when it is really close to the beater, or completely out in front of the drum, personally.

It always sounds like a basketball hitting a barrel when you just put it in the middle of the drum IMO.

If the 012 rocked your world, then enjoy!

there's a club in KC , the hurricane and they get the best live kick sound anywhere using a 52, but every time I try to record with one I just don't like it. Of course I don't have a neumann to couple it with

when placed right in the front of the outside skin it sounded like shit. We finally got something better putting it about 2 inches from of the outside skin pointing at the ceiling, mixed 50/50 with the 012 it was ok, but you're right , it would have probably sounded better farther away from the kick

I like them on bass cab at times.
I've had no luck with them on kick.

I like it on distorted rhythm guitars that I want to be dark and pushed back sounding. The Beta 52 removes any sort of stridency and most of the brightness.

I used mine on a kick the other night. Just barely peeking in the hole & pointed up..but not at the beater..more towards the center of the shell. The kick was pretty dull & muffled with a pillow. I added my homemade speaker mic it came alive. I would have rather taken the pillow out but the drummer insisted we leave it. I've also had great luck with the 52 when I added a royer about 2 ft out. For heavy rock I almost always have to use another mic with it. I've also tried it on bass amps a few times but preferred the cheap $50 cad kick mic everytime. I want to try that EV kick mic. I've heard em live in clubs a few times & felt the power...

my roomate has a sonor jungle kit with a beta52 may mounted inside... with 2 solid heads on it it give a dope hiphop/drum'n'bass sound. if it's tuned higher, and you bunce the beater, it's kinda cool for a jack dejohnette kind of dead-ish jazz sound. it sounds good in this context.

cheers,

The beta52 is actually my fist choice for kick drum mic when I am going for a tight rock or pop drum sound. I am also a big fan of them on bass cabs.

I must be doing something wrong because the beta52 has sounded great on almost every kick I have ever miced with it (after I scoop out a little 500hz)

Used one last weekend. Technical math-core stuff. 421 inside the kick, pointed just right below the beater. 52 outside of the kick, pretty much centered, about 6 inches of. The rest of the kit was two MK-012's for overheads and a 57 underneath the snare. In a live sounding room, sounded pretty darn good, but drummer is pretty darn good so that is probably why.

I'm with you, I've never liked the 52 in a kick drum, although it's the first mic I would grab when someone wanted the spikey Lars kick drum sound.

The only thing I've ever really liked it on (and it's very cool for this) is the bottom speaker of a Leslie cabinet.

B52+a dirty sounding comp(read: distressor)=live kick drum fun.

hey man, I'll buy it from ya. Yeah, I like 'em. Sound good on kick and bass. cool background vocal sound sometimes. Ever wanted an acoustic guitar with CRAZY bass? Try that. I've used it on everything, and liked it at some point. Just gotta fuck around. Odd sounds can fit in really well. Try it on vocals.
