Pixies Live Sound

Post by stevebozz » Wed Dec 08, 2004 1:52 pm

Just saw the Pixies this past weekend, the live sound was excellent. I noticed a few things about their micing techniques, but looking for someone to fill in the gaps.

- Amps: each guitar had 2 half stacks(clean and dirty?), L and R top speakers were miced on BOTH. Two different styles of mics.. one looked like an AKG C414 style?

- Drums - one overhead was above the drummer's left arm pointing towards the snare. The other was much lower and pointed at the ride cymbal. To me this looks like it would cause phase cancellation problems.. am I missing something?

Anyway, if you've caught them on this tour.. what were your thoughts.

Musically, they were fantastic.
Steve

No clue on the mics but I did notice when I saw them a few months ago that their monitors are behind them.

They did rock, btw.

I worked the show in Philly/Camden.Here's the mic lowdown:

Drums: sm91 in kick, beta 52 outside kick, beta 57 on snare, 603 on hh,senny 604's on toms,sm81's on OH.

Gtrs were beta 57's and senny 609's

Bass 421

Vox's bets 58's

Hope this helps

Peace

I think I know their soundman and/or tour manager. This guy: http://www.planet-of-sound.com/staff.html. Said he closed the studio to do a Pixies tour so this must be it. Ask him.

I wonder if he got his recording studio name from the Pixies song....

One of the latest Mix mags has the whole lowdown on the Pixies live setup...

Agreed. I saw them on the 16th, which I believe was #4 out of 5 shows in the windy city. They had better have sounded good after 3 nights in the same venue. The CD sounds great as well.

I believe the new CD was "mastered" @ Planet of Sound using Pro Tools and Waves plugs. A friend of mine assisted on that session.

I recently found at a garage sale one of their live 2-CD sets (4/27/04 in Eugene to be exact) that they sold after shows....

It sounds fabulous...

they were sorta okay in cleveo. It was more of a "I gotta see this" type of deal. I love them to death, but couldn't help feeling like a sap (mostly cause I bought a ticket for my girl and best friend who are both poor (I mean poorer then I am)). A friend shelled out the unreal amount of cash (25 bucks) to get the live CD and I must say that they screwed up "hey" wayyyyyyyyy to much. But alas I am a cynic. Long live the pixies.

i thought kim deal was sober this tour.
