My New Toy (G5)

Post by MattGrabe » Fri Dec 10, 2004 11:08 am

mmmm I just emptied my pockets for a new PowerMac G5 (Dual 1.8). Right now it's just an expensive CD burner, don't have the software for it yet.

Can't wait to do some mixing on it! Any G5 users out there?

FedEx JUST delivered my new dual 2.0!!!

I'm counting the minutes until I get to go home and fire it up. Too bad we're having people over for dinner tonight...

I've been using mine for about 6 months now and I just last week noticed it chugging a tiny bit with 6 instances of waves stereo trueverb and 1176 on every channel.
It's a dream come true at 24/96 with 32 channels.
have fun!
Also, make sure you have a blank CD in there, then open itunes, then burn your song. If you stick a CDR in there after you open iTunes, it gets cranky.
Also, set your hard drive to NEVER rest, this way it won't stop spinning when you're taking a few moments break during a session. That took me sooo long to realize. I'd take a minute break from a session to talk to a player and then have to wait for the hard drive to start spinning again before we could record.

One of the first things I did was set it to never rest. I just put it to sleep whenever I am done. The "breathing" power light in sleep mode is very nice :)

What monitors are you guys using with your G5s? The Apple monitors are more expensive then the computer!

We spent the summer at the studio where I work completely upgrading our Dual 2.0 G5 to no end. Now it has a 1TB RAID, and 8GB of RAM, and 2 Studio 17" Monitors.

It writes data at 247 MB/sec, and reads at 180 MB/sec.

For a monitor, I picked up:

19" Princeton with DVI connection. With the $100 rebate, it's a good deal. It's not silver, but whatever.

Absolutely love my dual 2.0.

I was trying to do video work on a dual 800 before - painful! Now it's a breeze (well, there still are a few video plug-ins that will choke it, but they're awesome plugs anyways..).

I use an NEC/Mitsubishi 18" monitor - got a refurb for about half the street price of a new one. It's sweeeet!

Just upgraded from single 1.6 to dual 2.0 to accommodate HTDM plugs like Waves IR-1 (which choked the old machine). Now we have enough bandwidth to do all of our usual TDM stuff (HD Accel 3) and three instances of IR-1.

Um... I just got my refurb Dual 2 and for whatever reason it has a bigger HD (250GB) and twice as much memory (1GB) as it was supposed to come with. Luck of the refurb draw!!!!!! Hot damn.

Lovin' my dual 2 G5 here as well. I was always a Mac guy... then went Windows a couple years ago. It was fine... but when I caught the Apple Lust again and got this beast along with the iPod...I was bathed and reborn in the cult of Jobs.

That's a historic quote. "32 channels at 24/96... hah! Today we're doing 512 channels at 256/2048!

I'm going to get a G5 as well, probably just the single 1.8. While I want the Apple 20" monitor, its frikken $1300 - I know I can get a different manufacturer for less, but I want Apple + Apple... I don't know why, I'm just dorky like that. Plus I'm not sure if it's Apple monitors that are different from PC monitors, or the system itself or both - Apples are brighter for one, and I hear they are best color option for graphics work - perhaps the truest color.
