I dig the RE20 on loud SVT or fliptop type cabs. The SM7 isn't too shabby either.

The only true great mic on this planet is the Shure SM-57. It is the most consistant in not totally sucking of anything ever built. All other mics are "application dependant".

Yeah, the Beyer M380 is pretty kick-ass. They'd do well to re-release that mic. I don't know of any other figure-eight dynamics. I think the problem was that Beyer was really trying to market it as a kick drum mic and it's a pretty terrible kick drum mic.

I've also had terrific luck with the D112 on bass amps.

They've been through several. There's the TGX50, which is cool, but a different beast. Its sort of a nice alternative to the D112. It's bright and hypercardioid, like you might expect from a "modern" kick drum mic. It also has a ridiculously high output, like the M380.

Beyer has also since discontinued the TGX50 and replaced it with one of the Opus Series mics. It looks like a silver version of the 380/TGX50, but I haven't really heard it yet. One of the studios in which I work got one not long ago, but I have yet to try it out.

the m380 is totally the rad. the sound is soooo tubby, but its nice to mix it with sumpin bright on the same source. its got the face bass.

i'm usin the opus 65 on outside kick right now. hypercardiod LDD. its cool i guess. prox efct is maybe a little midrangey for my taste, but i like it betta than the d112 thass fr shure...

shure!

i saw a guy using a D112 on bass. The strange thing was he ran the bass through a proco rat on the way in to the amp. He turned the gain way down low. It sounded okay, and was an intersting new technique. It was Don Dephew, that guy who did some GBV as well as every other shitty clevo band.

I've been using this as well. Sounds good. I am curious to get a PL20 or an RE20 to see if there is a better sound.

that's the one i was thinking of.

there is a quote around somewhere from steve albini about the difference between the two. from what i remeber, he's a fan of the original 380..
