Audix mic for bass drum
I have a D112 and I hate it. It always sounds the same, and it's not a sound I dig. More often than not, I'll put my AT4050 on the kick (no hole in my bass drum), but would prefer to use that elsewhere during the session.
I work at a drum shop that just became an Audix dealer, and I can get them pretty cheap through my employee discount.
I've read mixed opinions on the D6. It sounds as though I'll be hitting the EQ a lot, and that it has some things in common with the D112. I saw at least one guy here uses the D4 on kick.
Any other suggestions? Is there an Audix mic that I will actually like, considering how unimpressed I am with the D112?

Re: Audix mic for bass drum
the D4 is a pretty good kick mic. it definately needs to be EQ'd a bit, but i sometimes prefer that to the lame-o super scoop of modern-y kick mics. it doesn't work for everything, but for me it has been a rather versatile mic. I also use a D12 (thanks SMH) and an RE20 sometimes. and the CAD E100 makes a great kick mic, too.

i just got an I-5, and it sounds really nice on everything. Kick drum included. Probably not a great go to kick mic, but it work better than a 57.

Re: Audix mic for bass drum
Well, I don't find it to be similar at all to a D112, but for me that's a good thing.
I love the D4 for the same reasons described by Toaster. The CAD he mentioned is my favorite stage mic of all time, though the Audix i5 has kept me in a constant state of glee lately. "Versatile" is an understatement for the i5. I have used this thing on just about everything. It is now my go-to nylon string guitar mic! Total problem solver. Still, not my fave on kick (though mixing it with another mic would likely work well.) The D6 is my kick mic period. I only need to EQ if I am going for a less-natural sound (metal klik drum, for instance), otherwise, it generally sounds quite good without any help from me.
As I am writing from a live sound perspective, I understand that my claims may not hold up in the more critical environment of the studio. No lawsuits, please!

If you're not opposed to Audio Technica, the ATM25 is a favored option for many people on this board.

I do believe that my D6 is indestructible, a truck could run over it and it would still work, it's small, compact, handy, sleek and shiny. Now ontop of all that I'm expecting it to sound good? I better get real.

Re: Audix mic for bass drum
Thanks for all the feedback..
Can any of you get into specifics? I don't like that modern scooped sound. I'm more of a vintage guy, I suppose, though nothing specific comes to mind aside from the variety of drum sounds you'll hear on records by the Beatles, the Doors, CCR, and the Kinks (when you can hear it). I don't need massive amounts of low end, and I like some of that midrange sound when it's appropriate.
How does the D6 fit into this? The D4? Would you use one of them if a drummer wanted what I just described?

Sure, D12 would be nice if I had the money. But since I'm getting a super good deal on Audix mics, I'd like to try one out.

Re: Audix mic for bass drum
HEy,
So the D4 was my "go to" kick mic for the longest time. Then one day I decided to try other stuff. Tried a 421 and it sucked. I started using the D112 and it actually worked pretty nice here and there. I also used an AT4047 for a while, as well as a 4050. Then just recently, after about a year of not using it, I went back to my trusty D4, and it blew me away. This mic sounds awesome in front of a kick drum. I have used it on at least 15 different kick drums, and I don't ever remember swapping it out with another mic, although I know I've eneded up being disapointed with other mics, swapping with a D4 and being happilly surprised every time. So far I've known three engineers that heve gone out and bought a D4 after hearing me us it on a kick drum.
Never used the D6, sorry. But compared to the following,
RE-20
D112
421
AT4050
AT4047
CAD E-350
I would say that the D4 has had a much higher success rate for me on kick drums (although different needs/situations require different mics).

If you want a "non-modern" kick try an EV RE-20. It's got the funky thwump in the low mids. Drives the kids crazy!
