they are quite nice sounding..like a pretty 57. nice lows, clean mids with a slight scoop, smooth highs and a more durable case. looks pretty too.

I love RE20s. When I get some paid work (i.e. not my band) I'll have to pick one up! :)

But what about Bob Barker?
It's nice to be nice to the nice.

I managed to borrow a D6 and an i5 from work. Here's a sample:

OH - Rode NT5 pair
Kick - D6
Snare - i5
Floor - AKG D880

Considering that I don't want a modern style, I sure had the wrong bass drum heads on. The Aquarian Super Kick and Regulator heads always sound nice and punchy. I usually use two Powerstroke Fiberskyn heads, but the last session called for a modern kick sound. I'll try again with a different setup.

I had to take a LOT of low end off the snare, plus I got rid of the low ring around 250Hz. I added some top end to brighten it up too. I compressed it to hell with the Ultrafunk "1176" style preset.

The overheads were compressed with Waves RCL.

The kick is straight... no EQ or compression whatsoever.

If a different drum sounds similar, I might go for the D4.

I bought my D6 for a ridiculous price about 8 months ago or so and I really really like it. It has plenty of low end but nice definition as well. I would recommend the D6 to anyone. On a similar note I aso recently acquired my friends Shure drum mic kit and I absolutely love the PG52. If you want to know what the PG52 sounds like then put on any track from Wilco's 'A Ghost Is Born' Sounds just like that: big, round and thumpy.

Both the D6 and the PG52 are wonderful mic choices for capturing a desirable kick drum sound.
