421 bass rolloff switch

Post by junkstar » Tue Dec 21, 2004 3:57 pm

I just bought my first 421 (used). No paperwork. Could anyone fill me in on how they usually use the 5 position bass rolloff switch? What settings for which applications? Just a basic guide.. Thanks.

Just put it on "M" and forget it exists ;)

That is the usual studio move.

The "V" position was for voice (?) and doesnt sound good for voice anyway. "M" is for music.

Aside from that, try it out, I bet you wind up with the thing set at "M."

Hope that helps.

Thanks Joel. It came set to 'M' - maybe a good sign... I appreciate the reply.

Oh yeah. duh. The V is on the RCA's... And on a few other weird mics. Thank you for the correction!

Every once in a while I use one for snare drum. Often I'll click it like 1 or two clicks to the "S" just to get a bit clearer sound, but YMMV.

They are very nice for Toms and bass reamping.

I never take it off "M"
"S" setting is way thin.

I'm pretty sure you can download a manual (or at least a sheet) from Sennheiser.

Anyway, it's a variable-frequency low cut. 'M' is "out", 'S' is "in" with the highest setting... and inbetween settings are those other positions between M and S.

Most mixers now have a low cut switch on every input, so it isn't as important to have one on the mic anymore. Back in the 60's and 70's it was definitely useful to have a low cut on the mic, because the mixers didn't have that feature except on the very top of the line units.

M = Macho

S = Sissy

This might be a good idea for my new tattoo!!!

same with the SM7...things like that on mics freak me out.

Hmmm... not alot of 421 lovers here. Maybe admirers, but not lovers. Well, I bought it already and look forward to playing with it. I just need to figure out what the next mic purchase will be... still gotta get me one of those SM7's. I've been singing into my 414 for almost a decade and need a change.

i'm a total 421 head. :shock:

kick and bass...mainly bass. has a great low mid thing that helps distinguish it from a kick miced with a d112 or similar scoopy kick thing. also has a bitey mid

great on horns....some vocals...but it's a little too 'grippy" or nasel sounding in the upper mids for my liking on this topendy type stuff...

great mic. love it.

dont be afraid of the dial on the 421..its come in handy when i needed to take the bottom off of the source..I use 421 on bass cabs all the time..through my audix modules its sounds like the classic 70's porno bass..which some dont like but to each his/her own right..

and I do what bigtoe does and use it when a d112 is on the kick..its like instant seperation of bass and kick..which is truely a godsend in any recording situation..
