I like to use a 421 for sax, although a 441 is even better...

The 421 is a great neutral mic for mixing with a condensor. Can add a lot of body without having a distinct sound like a 57.

I've been thinking of investing in one of these mics and have been wondering: Is there a vast difference in sound between the vintage version(s) and the newer U5 (with the bass roll off) version? How do they sound micing clean guitar amps?

Muchas gracias,
Brian

421 is a great mic. I love it on guitar and bass. It can be a really good rock vocal mic. And of course it rules on toms. I just wish it wasn't so damn long...

I wonder if they can be modded to be side address? Then it would be easier to place it on a tight drum-set.

D'oh! I dropped the ball on that one. Thanks for posting those links though, Beard of Bees. And thanks to everybody else. That answers those questions.

I just need to figure out what the next mic purchase will be... still gotta get me one of those SM7's. I've been singing into my 414 for almost a decade and need a change.
I love mine for kick, bass cabs, guitar cabs, tom toms and occasionally a vocal. It also works like a blackjhack when someone tries to assault you.

I used it on an Ampeg bass cab over the weekend (set to 'M') and thought it sounded great. Big bottom, nice definition. Glad I bought it.

Fantastic on lap steel through an Ampeg b12. Very smooth and full.

Great on guitar amps in general. Vocals sometimes. Percussion of various sorts.

That's a long link. But it goes to a page of goofball xmas mp3s. Steelin Tinsel is the steel track.

The playing (mine) ain't stellar, but I liked the tone.
