Paul Simon is kind of a twat, but...

Post by the brill bedroom » Sat Jan 01, 2005 4:18 pm

"Bookends" is one of the most perfect albums ever. Such fabulous songs, incredible arrangements, friggin' genius guitar parts, there's virtually nothing wrong with it. Perhaps a case could be made for Artie's "voices of old people" track being surplus to requirements, but still...

I've been listening to this album since I was a kid and never get over it (I have several vinyl copies with the chord changes written on the back- it's essentially how I learned to play guitar).

Just saying, is all.

Agreed.
"America" is one of my all time favs, as well as "Faking it" "Hazy Shade of Winter" etc.
I love the string parts on Old Fiends Bookends, they seem to go in and out of key, kind of like the sounds of the city that they're singing about.

I saw Simon and Garfunkel on their recent tour, those guys still have it.

As much as I hate the guy's music, he's a genuine craftsmen when it comes to writing songs. I still hate his records, though.

That is a great album!!

Save The Life Of My Child is a underrated psychedelic masterpiece.

The match strike at the start of Overs is a great recording moment.

Wretched, unadulterated crap. Sorry, his music is unforgivable. May the flames not burn to hot.

I've found that every Si and Gar record is overflowing with gems.

Fuck, even "Wednesday Morning, 3 AM" is alright.

I'll even go as far to say "There goes Rymin' Simon" is ok.

Paul Simon's an awesome guitarist too.

"So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright" is THEE shit!!

ok. I'm done.

As good as a songwriter as he is -- you just can't get over the fact that the guy is a little weenie. He's made his whole career basically ripping people off, and being kind of crafty about it. Starting with the Everly Brothers when he and Garfunkel were teenagers, then Dylan and Irish folk music, then African Zulus -- the guy doesn't have an original bone in his body.

I grew up listening to Graceland, and it is still one of my favorite records. It seems that he may feed off of stuff he's interested in (Everly Bros., Dylan, African Music) but he also seems to add his own flare. Even with out Ladysmith, Graceland is a cool record. He may be a mook, but he's a great songwriter and an amazing guitar player. I put him up there with Brian Wilson, McCartney, Lennon, and Dylan, but then again i'm kind of a weenie too.

Right. Like most pop music is totally original and non-derivative anyway?

Music constantly derives from and builds on what came before or what's happening at the time. Every "pop" artist you've ever heard is a "ripoff" in that sense.

...and face it, there's plenty of "twats" in the music biz.

S&G have some of the sweetest harmonies EVER. Their music is the type that everybody loves. A rare breed.
