Do you mean +6/185? Or do you mean you have a 250 nWb/m reference and you're going +6 over that? Cuz if that's the case, you're at +9, but usually it's notated as x/185 - 185 nWb/m = "0" being the "standard" established by Ampex back in the '50s. This is important to know, cuz if you're running a 5050 at +9, you're prob'ly right on the edge of clipping and may actually have better results with a lower operating level and hitting the tape a little harder (ie: more mic gain to push your tape meters into the red). Anyway, if you ARE at +6 with 456, you'll hit tape compression almost immediately over 0 VU (and definitely before that point with transients), if you are at +6 with GP9, you're likely not nearing tape compression at all.
hhhhmmm, now i'm confused, but i think you're right, it's gotta be +6@185. my friend aligned it for me with his mrl and apparently i wasn't paying close enough attention. oh, the shame. anyway, certainly i've had the meters pinned with the 456 and its sounded fine. when you say "on the verge of clipping" you mean the input electronics, correct? granted my ears are stone, but i've recorded enough stuff on this deck that i'd have heard them crapping out by now...

shit. i don't like 57s on snare (really), i have neither an api amp or an 1176, and the console is a mackie, so nuff said there. there's no way i can properly record anything is there? i'm just gonna give up. first one to boston can have all my old reels of gp9.

You mean the guy with the bangs, but kind of spiky on top? And you have sideburns, too? I think I know who you are. I'll be there in 45 minutes to get the tape.
Actually, in all seriousness, I checked out some of your tunes ('cuz I like your handle) and that's cool stuff. She's a great singer and the production is very enticing.

All I'm saying is I'm gonna buy like four or five 1/4" reels for my Tandberg 2 Track, and just keep recording over stuff until the tape deteriorates. It'll be all hip and lo-fi once the tape gets to a certain wear point.

well, if you are young enough, dumb enough, fucked up enough, the charles is frozen enough and you are standing at the marriot you can take a shortcut back to boston...
