blackface adat to motu to firewire

so my friends were recording 8 inputs from a firewire motu, but for 8 more channels they hooked up a blackface adat for an interface (no tape)

for some reason everything went fine in the general live reording, however to punch in seriously distorted the pitch and tempo of the tracks ... original WAV files also (recording into sony vegas)

eventually the engineer just adjusted each wav file to match the correct pitch and tempo, but what could be done to not have this problem?
