I have a lot of cool indie bands on my site under my links section if you are bored and want some cool bands to check out. :) Lately I have been digging Fader Band, Kristy Hanson, supermodel-T, and a lot of other indie ones in and out of rotation in the cd player. If you want also, one of my bands Almost Famous has a cd out that is linked under my music section on my site that you're welcome to check out. We have it up for online download and what not.

Aquarius Records' site always has good descriptions and sound samples in their new releases roster - they have pretty good taste for obscure music.

Forcedexposure.com is also informative, but no sound clips

corinpills wrote:Another recommendation: they're hoplessly old fashioned, but in the nicest possible way- the Bees from the Isle Of Wight. It's classic 60's influenced pop recorded at Abbey Road and using all the old gear. Free The Bees is the album title.
Just checked out the Bees website and I like these guys A LOT. First of all, their website is really cool. Secondly, they've nailed the 60's SanFran hippy sound down to a tee, up to adding massive amounts of reverb on the vocals. The songs are well-written, imho. Plus, these feckers got to record in Abbey Road. Feckers. Kinda remind me of my band, wedge, too. Definitely my next CD buy...

ok...so my listening has gone a bit introspective and sadcore.

I just got the newest Eliot Smith, Bright Eyes (Fevers, Mirrors...?), Grandaddy (The Sophtware Slump). I really dig it all.

I can't believe that I haven't heard of %95 of the music you people have listed here...not that I am some sort of know it all guru...that I am excited that there is so much good music out there to still hear.

If you like any electronica, try Lali Puna.

Jon Webber, "Simple Complex", Jon is a monster Jazz buff and pianist...

Johnny Hiland, "Johnny Hiland" Johnny is on Steve Vai's label, Favord Nations and he's a country lookin guy but, he shreds as well...

I just got turned an to some amazing international music by a friend:

Djavan Gasparyan: He's the Armenian Duduk player on the Peter Gabriel Passion disc, his traditional material is haunting and gorgeously sad. "Apricots in Eden" is a beautiful disc.

Tinariwen: "Amassakoul": Toureg nomads from the south sahara discover electric guitars and piss off their elders.

Yat-Kha: Tuvan "punk" band, imagine the acoustic tunes of Led Zep III with throat singing instead of Plant singing.

Henri Agnel: He's a Moroccan-born French classical guitarist, I have a disc of his where he collaborates with a Persian percussionist on pre-renaissance Italian songs. He plays the Cistre(?), which sounds like a less-annoying mandolin, and the music sounds more middle Eastern than anything else. Beautiful!

Other stuff:
Eyvind Kang and Tucker Martine: Orchestra Dim Bridges: low key instrumental pop and experimental soundscapes.

The Dub Trio disc I raved about in this forum a few days ago.

The latest thing in my collection is Anour Brahim's 'Vague', it's a compilation of his stuff, including film scores, solo oud pieces and collaborations with jazz guys, like Dave Holland, really great, and very varied. Awesome.
The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away.

Have you ever checked out the Bulgarian State Television Female Vocal Choir? Catchy name, huh?

I think CD's of them are called "Mystere des Voix Bulgares" or something like that, on Nonesuch records. I had one and then lent it out a few years ago and now it's gone. This is good mind clearing stuff. Cool dissonant harmonies blasted out with no vibrato most of the time, based on old Bulgarian folk songs and field calls, composed by guys with 20th century sensibilities.

It's a good choice of you don't already know it and are looking for something different-

Things that I have been listening to that are VERY interesting for the recordings alone include:Euphoria-A Gift from Euphoria-Two guys, recorded in L.A. and Nashville, composed orchestras morphing into bluegrass and then again into wierd psych and proto alt-country freakouts a la the Flying Burritto Brothers. Also check out Dungen, Bjorn Olsson, Fennesz, Mouthus, Electroputas....So much good stuff out there. aquariusrecords.ord and othermusic.com are great recourses for obscure music.-Tyler
