Electronic Engineering for Audio Dummies

Can anyone recommend a good source for electrical engineering in the audio field for someone whose entire knowledge boils down to knowing how to change a tube and how to plug stuff in? I kind of feel like a race car driver that only knows how to put gas in a car to 'make it work.' If I am going to consider myself a recording engineer, I need to know what goes on inside all of my beautiful little boxes. I need to learn about what makes them work, how they affect signal, how to identify high-quality circuitry, and ... well ... EVERYTHING!

Any ideas for websites to visit, books to read, or magazines to subscribe to? I would only be interested in audio equipment here, I'm not looking to become a robotics master or a tv repairman.

I got my start understanding circuits by studying Forrest Mims III's books when I was a kid. Radio Shack carries (carried?) a selection of his inexpensive paperbacks with titles like "Engineer's Mini-Notebook: Op Amp IC Circuits" and "Getting Started in Electronics". I highly recommend picking up some of his publications. His writing is geared toward creative people without a background in electronics, and they're full of simple circuits you can put together with a handfull of parts. None of the projects inside qualify as hi-fi audio, but he does include simple plans for audio mixers, amplifiers, oscillators, filters, and preamps that you can build for a couple of bucks.

In any case, when you find some electronics literature that looks interesting, you should pick up a solderless breadboard and start building circuits. Many times they won't work properly until you've done some troubleshooting and learned something new through your mistakes.
