Behringer. Tempting bastards..

Post by teamdresch » Mon Jan 10, 2005 11:07 am

Another pair of 24/96 i/o for my 002... less than $250!
It probably sounds like ass, but good enough for room mics, scratch vox etc.
Can I bring myself to buy Behringer??

I wouldn't be afraid of it.. I have a Behringer Mixer and it works well.

And for the price!? Go for it.. I dont think you'll be sorry.. and you can always use it for the things you mentioned if it isnt' the hi-fi you hope and dream for.

To be totally honest, I actually like Behringer (for the $ of course). and Ive used Neve pres and vintage LA-2s and i own universal audio pres. I dont think Behringer is totally worthless. Yes, it is not the greatest but the STUFF WORKS. plus you dont blow too much $ away. I say go for it if you need it.

I bought my first Behringer piece of gear recently...that 8 channel headphone amp.

I was actually very impressed with the detail of the manuals/packaging/warantee/customer service......so personally, I don't have anything bad to say about Behringer yet.

I use a behringer mixer as well....the eurodesk....ya know the one with the meter bridge built in! (take dat mackie) ...i dont use the pres on it anymore, but when i did ,,,they did the job... and actually I used a Mackie 1604 before that and absolutely hated how boxy the pres sounded...
I used to have the older version of the ultramatch...it worked well and did the job.

I sort of have a theory about where you live in the country, affects cheap gear.

example. I live basically in kansas city....never had a problem with any new behry gadget but...

my friends on the east coast have gone through so much behringer gear, alot of it DOA???

west coast..very similar

Where is all of this Behringer stuff made? What kids of parts do they use? I've heard they make knock-offs of everything. I owned a patchbay once, years ago, in fact I still miight have it in storage. Oh yeah! no one would buy it on ebay!

Nah, save up a few more bucks and look around, there's gotta be sumthin better for your rig!

I've been mighty tempted by their "magician" pre with what, like 8 xlrs or something for around $160.

Everytime anyone slams Behringer, I always think about the poor sound quality of nearly everything done by the late, great Hank Williams, and how if he'd had a fraction of the technology that is so cheaply and massively produced today, it would have sounded a little better. Of course, that's open to interpretation, but you KNOW that engineers in the 50s would be drooling over Behringer stuff if THEY had it.

So yeah, I'm still tempted.

My cheapo Behringer compressors sound OK to me, their exciter I own is kinda lame and a 'mastering' unit I have of theirs is completely worthless and out the door very soon. Depends on what you buy.

Confession time.( I know I'll get flamed for this) but.... I have quite a few pieces of the "Older" Behringer gear that I still use. Here is the clencher.. (drum roll).. I've been using it since around 1995' or so, and none of it, I mean none of it (knock on wood) has stopped working! This gear comes from the time era when noted engineers such as Robert Scovill was endorsing the Behringer gear (FWIW). To me (IMO), the older Behringer gear was better made, used better components than the newer Behringer gear.(IMHO). Try picking up an older piece, and compare the newer gear in weight! :ar15: ...... I'm running now..
