Recording Pro Tools at 96k Sample Rate on Digi 002?
Recording Pro Tools at 96k Sample Rate on Digi 002?
I tried a bold experiment during the rainy weekend here in LA...I recorded a song of mine at 96k sample rate, instead of my usual 44.1.
It sounded great, and ate up a bunch of hard drive space. I noticed a few more "CPU too slow" and "increase buffer rate" messages pop up, but once I adjusted those, all seemed fine.
I didn't use a ton of plugs, but when bouncing down, the bounce handler couldn't keep up, no matter what sample or bit rate I set the bounce parameters. After I rebooted my G5, it bounced no problem.
What experiences have people had recording at this rate, or am I the last person to try this? I'll definitely try it again, but unsure yet to try it on my clients...
Thanks,
Arthur

99% of everything I do is at 96 khz. It may take up more room on the hard drive but now that a 120 Gb firewire drive is around $150, I don't sweat it anymore. Hi-Res is the shit.

I haven't gone to it yet 'cause the system at work is still stuck at 24 bit/44.1kHz at max. But in three weeks we upgrade to PTHD so I will try some of that out.

I've been doing all of my projects at 24/96 lately and it would be hard to go back. We are running a PTHD excel II system so that helps with the chunk factor.
Hard drives are cheap so 96 is the way for me..

Thanks.
Anyone running 24/96 on a Digi 002,that's what I'm using? I'm wondering how hard I can run it...I've also got a Glyph FW drive, they've got that quiet and sturdy reputation....

So whats the deal with running the 002 at 96K? You can only use the analog and s/pdif inputs and not the lightpipe, or something like that?

Does anything run lightpipe at 96k? Does it support it?
I run PTHD at 88.2 for high res recording. All the guys I know that record huge records are just using 88.2. I bet that would save a LITTLE for the 002 setup you are talking about. I use it because it sounds great, 88.2 is so far past the nyquist anyway....

Hey Roland,
96 on the 002 for the light pipe means you have to use two light pipes cables. 1-4 on one and 5-8 on the other.
I think the SPDIF works the same.... course I'm still shucking along with my 001 at 44.1 / 24.
Hows the band?
We are at Dublin next month...

Re: Recording Pro Tools at 96k Sample Rate on Digi 002?
I have used a 002 tracking at 96 or 88.2 exclusively with no problems. The converters aren't as nice as on my 192 I/Os (for my HD Accel 3 system) but are better than those in the 001 or Mbox. I get by with the eight-channels-at-a-time tracking limitation (I don't have an external 2 ch ADC for the S/PDIF input). Not sure what Huntlabs means about using two Lightpipe cables on a 002, mine only has one in and one out, and my understanding is that the Lightpipe optical interface will not pass signal above 48k (an optical S/PDIF input will accept up to 96k).

My bad, my Octopre has two lightpipe outs and will support 96 output using two cables...
I thought the 002 had two lightpipe ins.
I was wrong.
I wish it did support it on the lightpipe side....
Maybe there will be a 003 at NAMM.

I love 24/96 on my Digi 002 Rack, it has so much more depth than anything lower resolution.
It has replaced my tape machine even for drums and bass unless I'm looking for a retro sound on them.

96kHz hi-res is absolutely addictive. I made the decision yesterday to track everything at 96kHz from now on and print my final mixes to tape.
No more 44.1 for me man.

This is interesting - I must have misunderstood my Digi rep when he said that Lightpipe (the ADAT optical format) wouldn't pass signal above 48k. I know several folks (and now you!) who use an OctoPre to track additional channels into their 002 but only at 44.1/48k. I was not aware you could do the old "Paq-Rat" style splitting trick with a Lightpipe. I wonder why Digi didn't incorporate this feature into the 002 (allowing us to bring four digital tracks at 88.2/96k via Lightpipe as well as the eight channels at 44.1/48k). The ability to record twelve tracks at a time would be a huge advantage with a 002. I'll ask my Digi rep if he has any insights into this.

I am an amateur recorder just for record.
I have recorded in 96kHz/24bit on my computer. I use all native plugins and the computer gets slow pretty quick for me. I will wait until I have a little faster computer before I continue to record in 96kHz/24bit.
