How's this for liner notes?

Post by Rigsby » Fri Jan 14, 2005 8:38 am

One of my tunes, 'Little Rug' is going on this charity CD and they want a short bit of writing to go on the liner notes. I've only done this with groups before so we've all taken a hand in it, this time it's just me and so i wondered what you guys thought of this...

"Rigsby Smith - Little Rug
Put together over two afternoons with Glockenspiel, string samples, a 1960's Robert's radio and some light percussion especially for this compilation.
Smith is currently recording an album of original instrumental music with a variety of live instrumentation and providing glockenspiel and percussion for other artists' recordings. For more information, please visit www.rigsbysmith.net"

(Right now the site doesn't have anything more than a holding page, but we're working on that.)
Any suggestions, comments etc more than welcome.
Thanks guys.
The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away.

There shouldn't be apostrophies in "1960s" or "Roberts."

Sounds good.

I put apostrophes in 1960's, etc.

Of course, I'm probably wrong, too.

Why? "1960's" isn't possesive, nor is it a contraction.

Thanks guys, so i think we may have a winner. I'm trying not to be shy of self-promotion as that is kind of part of my nature, but do you think the website address on a compilation CD is a bit much?

The Roberts is right, definately, but i thought 1960's was possessive as the radio belongs to the 1960s as such, but yeah, my girlfriend has told me i'm wrong too. Actually, that does make sense. Okay cool.

Any more comments? This has to be in pretty soon. Thanks again.

I think the apostrophe in 1960's is correct. I believe this is an unconventional use of the apostrophe, where it doesn't either signify a contraction or indicate possession but is used nonetheless.
Of course, we could just brawl it out to see who is correct. Bring it on, Garges. I've got inverseroom on my side.

The apostrophe used in dates is actually a slightly outdated form that's being supplanted by the apostrophe-less "1960s" style. I suggest you go with the flow here - it's a bit more clean and streamlined, and at this point the apostrophe will probably trip more people up than the lack of an apostrophe.

Having your website on it is a great idea, as long as it's going to have the same address for a while... promote, promote, promote! People who're genuinely interested in finding out more about you will think it's great that you provided it. And that's the point, init?

HAHA!

Why would it be used nonetheless? The plural form is used because the writer is referring to a period of ten possible years. Pural is not indicative of apostrophe useage under any circumstances that I can recall excpet possessive.

I couldn't find anything in Strunk and White's Elements Of Style on it, but I didn't spend much time looking. I've got to bolt to a gig, but I'll check it out again when I get a chance to find some further substantiation.

heh heh heh

Well whatever - the "Robert's" is emphatically, unquestionably WRONG!!
