Three words:

porn star name

(middle name plus your street name).

That would make me Christopher Fargo.

Awesome!

Seriously though, I used to have an aversion to people doing solo projects under their own name (I know, it makes perfect sense to use one's own name, but it still bothered me), but I don't mind it so much any more. I'm still trying to decide what I'll do when I finally get enough songs together to release in some fashion. Not crazy about my name either, so maybe I will just use Christopher Fargo!

I actually talked to a client today about doing a record that is going to be SO intentionally bad that everyone will want to use aliases on it. They want terrible engineering, as well. I'm all about it. Can't wait to start!

I'm thinking of using an alias for crap I do. Pat Aslin doesn't have much to a ring to it. And it's more fun to use a silly name I think.

Over here the porn star name has always been first pet's name and mother's maiden name. This would make me Salt Cooper, i always thought that was pretty cool actually, we almost used it in a group, but the other guitarist refused to be Goldie Wurts.

Huh. Workshed's technique would make me Theodore Cleveland. Damn, that's sophisticated - so sophisticated I'd have to wear a tweed sportscoat to gigs.

I use a fake real name because my real name is very hard to convey in one try - my first name is Nate but people always hear it as "Dave" and then "Jake" and then for the third time they always go for some weird exotic name like "Nayje." So my stage name is Nathan.

My Teutonic last name is pronounced differently from the way it looks to you Anglo-saxon swine, so I changed that too.

Perhaps you could put a little vote up or something on your site, so your existing fans can give you their opinion. I use an alias because there are many other people with my same real name.

Then there's the habit, particularly in drum&bass and IDM circles to name yourself after an already established act, witness the floor-wrecker, Cheap Trick or the brain-wrecker, Donna Summer, neither of whom are in any way connected with the well-known band or performer.

You could be Kuehn Concert or Keith Jarret. 8)

Chris-
I wanna hear that record when it's done! Yipes!

First pet's name and first street name are what I've always know of for the Porn Star Name.
I'd be Patty Columbia. (Trouble is, that sounds like the wrong gender for me.... be nice now.)

(Side note to Sleepy Bright Eyez: You ever heard the band Bright Eyes? Name's a little similar - thought you might want the heads-up... :( )
he took a duck in the face at two and hundred fifty knots.

http://www.radio-valkyrie.com/ao/aoindex.htm - download the new record (free is an option!) or get it on CD.

I was thinking the same thing

He's awesome, my dad's started giving me his records in trickles, so we go up to his loft every so often and i come down with as much as i can. Vasconcelos' 'Saudades' was one of those about two years ago, and i was just startled by the sound and beauty. He really is fantastic.

Don't suppose you play berimbau do you Chris?

Damn, Salt Cooper is a good one. If I went with that scheme, I'd be Ashley Jaquish. People always mangle Jaquish, so that probably won't fly.

People always get my first name messed up, too. They either spell it as "Brett" with two "t"s instead one one, they call me Brad, Brent, Bert, Rhett... I once worked with a lady for like three years and she called me Brad the entire time -- even though I had a nametag that clearly said, "Bret."

That would make me Ashley 99th. Awesome.

Weird, that was my grandfather's first name as well. Theron Orin Jaquish. Are you from the midwest? That side of my family was from the Wisconsin area, and they all had different names that you don't hear too often, like my grandma, for example: Inis.

Calling myself "Inverse Room" felt really weird for awhile, but now it feels totally normal. I had to think of something, because my real name is John Lennon, and I write non-musical stuff as J. Robert Lennon, and originally the music stuff (which does sound like a "band" is playing it) was gonna be completely separate from my other personal endeavors, mostly because I was embarrassed by it. But now that I'm more confident I make no particular secret of this, and it's all one thing. It's very internet, I suppose.

I think what convinced me was Aphex Twin. He makes no secret of his real name. But he puts forth this part of himself for public consumption--it's like the name of a folder of creative inspiration he has, and Aphex Twin is the name on the tab. At least that's how I think of it...

Jeez, that would make me Wags Oesper, far too Germanic for a direct descendant of Henry Hudson!
