I have had 3 AKG c1000s over the years and have heard nothing but bashing on this site. And I admit that the price tag alone says something of there quality, but I just love them. The strange spike around 7k sounds great to my ears while recording Acoustic Guitar. It's a love grown out of years of reliable consistent performance. Ya know what I mean?

Maybe not quite on topic, but I used to use AKG 535's as drum overs and loved them. Also, they were pretty nice on acoustic guitar.

The 535 is marketed as a live condenser vocal mic, but I say, if it sounds good, eat it.

I used to do alll my gear shopping at Cash Converters and the Goodwill.

Home stereo spring reverbs.
Yamaha SPX50.
The tube guts of a really bad old reel to reel rack mounted as a pre-amp (sounds awful in a great way).
No name bargin bin mics.
The Robot voice changer (works magic on a drum sub-mix).

My idea has always been that everything will do one thing really well. You just have to figure out what it is.

Put your drum mix through it and blend the compressed and uncompressed signals together.
I thought it was funny that Richard Dodd admitted to using these.
I know a few people who still love them.

For field recording there's nothing like it. Recharge-able -- Never needs batteries. Built-in mic means always ready for crappy recordings. Condenser mic plugged into the line-in yields loveliness. Line-in means I'm no longer dependent on my computer for grabbing audio on the fly in my studio. 192kbps on-the-fly encoding sounds much better to me than cassette tape. None of that messy mucking-with-media hijinks like with DAT tape.

And its a 20gig hard-drive to boot.

And awesome on road-trips.

I found the C1000s to be pretty nice on acoustic, at least on a few of my acoustics. I didnt like them much for overheads though. Funny that's the exact opposite of how I feel about my SM81s which I got to replace the C1000s.

I love those mics.... I use them on a lot of things. Last band I recorded I used them on the toms. Ive used them as overheads, accoustic guitar, lead vox and other stuff. Underrated mic in my opinon.

Alesis Nano-Compressor. No, it's not some magical secret weapon, but it sounds pretty neutral and is well worth the $99. Especially when my only other compressor is a RNC, which is useless for bass.
