Deceptively loud instruments
Inspired by the "slow preamp" thread...
So what instruments seem quiet, but are surprisingly loud? In particular I'm thinking of banjo... I never really liked the sound I was getting for banjos (except with a Sennheiser 441, but that's not often available). Then I had the bright idea to use the -10dB pad on the mic I was using (AKG 460), and it sounded great. I guess the banjo really is a drum with strings. But even sitting there next to the banjo, it doesn't seem loud enough to overload a mic.

This might seem stupid but, the first time I heard a full sized steel drum I was convinced that there had to be some kind of amp hiding somewhere. What a cool instrument with a LOUD sound !

Re: Deceptively loud instruments
going from a volume controled keyboard to a grand piano always took some loudness adjusting. also xylo, crash cymbals, gongs, all thoes things that never sound loud on records that are loud in real life

Mandolin
up close it is really harsh and spiky sounding
IMHO you need to be about 3 feet back before it starts sounding musical

Deceptively loud?
Triangle. That is a hard one to get right in the mix, same with really small shakers.
Triangle is one that has fooled me a bunch.

Is anyone else picturing a Batman-style villain called "the Triangle" lurking around Studio G, menacing our mild-mannered hero?Joel Hamilton wrote: Triangle is one that has fooled me a bunch.
Re: Deceptively loud instruments
My voice. I was overdubbing background vox on a track the other night with 2 friends and I kept having to move back from the mic, I tried singing softer but my voice just overpowered the others. Took a few takes to get the balance right.
