1 RU compressor

Post by jrsgodfrey » Mon Jan 24, 2005 6:25 pm

So, over the last few months I've been getting my rig more portable. I've settled on one 6RU case full of gear, an iBook, and bag of mics. So far it's a Metric Halo 2882, Sytek, RNP/RNC racked, headphone amp, and patchbay.

What I'm looking for is a 1RU compressor, mainly for vocals and acoustic guitar. The Distressor, which I've used and liked, seems the obvious choice, and is about where I'm looking to spend. Langevin ELOP would be super, but that's too pricey. Something in between might work. Right now I'm getting by w/ an ART Levelar (and not doing too badly, actually).

Any other 1RU comps of similar quality/similar money to the EL8 I should be looking at?

Thanks.

Jay

I don't think you're going to find anything more flexible than the Distressor.

The API 2500 is really starting to grow on me, although that's a bigger chunk of change (and a stereo unit). I've also been really curious about the new Drawmer (the 1968, I think), as I like the compressor in the 1960.

Most of the other 1-space units that I like are more colorful and "whacky."

If you need to sound like every jerk engineer limiting room mics to sound like every hip dave sardy record, you cant go wrong with a distressor. Eventually you may get to the point where you realize that it uses IC's in the audio path like all the other crap out there and maybe you'll tire of it and wish you just bought a discrete 1176 instead. If you want to sound like me, or garges (I had mine first fucker and I told you it ruled and that it needs to "grow on you") you can get a 2500 and yes, its worth saving the extra money. Its such a good limiter though, you may hate it because it doesnt sound like it does anything in which case you should get a distressor so all your drum tracks can sound like the new autolux record.

Remember you read all this on the internet. I ultimately reccomend Jenna Jameson, she's really outdoing herself at 30 and signing krystal Steal was a massively shrewd business move. Does anyone know the best gay porn site for under $19.95?

So, if I like the new Autolux record, does that make me gay? If so, forward that porn link...

It probably just makes you a MBV fan. I kinda like it the same way I liked the last Jet record which under no circumstances will I discuss on this board. Dave Sardy, its getting old.

I dont know much about gay porn. Lots of gay porn is actually shot by female porn stars, there are a few big contract female pornstars that shoot (photograph) lots of gay porn on the side. If gay men only knew. Its sorta like the reverse conspiracy of all the girl pop sex symbols for young teenage america (brittany, christina, jessica, etc) ALL learning to grind their music video hips from gay male choreographers, perhaps the greatest coup gay culture has had on white bread main stream bible thumping america, but dont tell anyone, thats supposed to be a big secret. Rumor has it I may be in the same room with monica sweetheart in a few days, I can ask her like, what is the best dildo for under $100 if anyone wants to know that type of thing. Best lube for under $50 in eastern europe, etc.

this is my new favorite link (warning: no monica sweetheart content)

You nailed it, as always.

in the song "Here Comes Everybody", when the nasty, honking fuzz kicks in at the chorus followed by the Belinda-esque drones of "Let's go.... let's go...." Damn. I've never seen these kids play live, but I'm guessing they're strappin' Jazzmasters.

Back OT: Why not go for a crusty old dbx 160? You'll have enough money left to treat Dave to some gay porn for the next several years.

P.S... If lube costs have skyrocketed to over $50 in eastern Europe, then I think now is the time to get into the export business.

there isnt anyting (no pun intended) on that record that kevin shields or louise post and nina gordon didnt do a million times cooler a long time ago. There also isnt anything (again, no pun intended ) that joe baressi didnt record a million times less cliche around the same time.

hey, I read on the internet that crushing room mics was cool, I should try that sometime... Seems like such a novel idea. I'll tell you, for my $35 Jeff turned me on to the coolest record ever which would change everybody's head on that issue.

You dont have to go to Prague to spend $50 on lube, you can do that right here in LA.

Yes Dave, and as usual, you were right. Of course, I'm making the assumtion that the console version of the 2500 found in the Legacy Plus is that same as the rack-mounted version.

I've had several 1960s over the years. Kind of tired of it's thing -- though I'm sure the Merc version is quite different. Really has to be +/- $1000.

I guess what I'm looking for is a LA-3/4 style thing in 1RU. Demeter seems to have one, and the Langevin I already mentioned. Don't need stereo, and it won't be for mixing (maybe a little).

I don't wish to crush anything.

Really? You should look into that. I've used the two rack space stereo Demeter units and they're very cool.

Chandler is making a single rack space box. I havent tried it yet , but the other stuff thay make is stellar. I dont know how much it is, and it may be just north of what you want to spend.

Side note to all that posted to this question:
JRS Godfrey is an amazing engineer and producer, and it is funny to see someone post about "squashing the shit out of things" and all this other rant (dave???) when Jay does amazingly audiophile, non-flavor of the month recording, and everything I have heard with his name on it sounds really honest, and very high quality.

It is funny that message boards work the way they do.

Grew up in LA lived there most of 30 years. Been in Cincinnati for 17. Would never go back to LA if I didn't have a business partner there. Still hate it when I go back every couple of years. It just seems to get worse than I remembered.

Back on the subject: I like 160x's, easy to use. 163x's for bass. Or you could do like I and others are doing, build your own favorite. I am building a pair of LA2A's and a pair of 1176's. Lot's of fun. Way cheaper with new components and you get to learn a lot more about your equipment (and trouble shooting) :D

Thanks, Joel. I return the Kudos.

Chris, this is the Demeter.

http://www.demeteramps.com/proaudio/hc1.html

I've never used any of there stuff, and I don't know of any around here. But I will try to check it out now. Anybody here familiar w/ it? Retail is $1200, so it's the right price.

The Studio Electonics C2s looks interesting, but from reviews it seems on the extreme side even at low settings. Is that really true? I need a light touch.

Hi-fi is important (don't want that DBX suck -- great on some things, though) but this is my portable rig -- when I need more I go to a fine studio (like G). I can't justify spending too much (it feels like stealing from my kids). The royalty gods have been kind of recent, though, so I need to act soon.

Thanks for all the input.
