For the bread, the Reveals rock. I used to have a set that I sold to Joel Patterson, although I only actually ever did one real mix for TV on them. They always sounded pretty pleasant and relatively natural. Plus, I have a thing for Tannoy.

The Wharfedale speakers are really excellent in general, although I haven't heard the active monitors. I have a set of Diamond 7.2s at home that I've had for about four years that I got through Wharfedale before they had a US distributor. I was really impressed when I heard the speakers and blown away when I heard how much they cost. I really hope the active studio monitors are on par with the ones I've got.

While admittedly I was coming from a shitty set of monitors, the Wharfedale Diamond Pro 8.2 Actives I picked up a couple weeks ago have drastically improved my mixes. I tested them against everything our best local pro sound store had up to $700. I used two recordings I know very well, one my band's album from a year ago, the other, my favorite Kinks record. The Wharfedale's were easily the best of their offerings.

Ya reckon?

I'm ashamed to admit, I've been monitoring almost excslusively on YSM-1s for the last 4 years. The are a murky at times, compared to the few times I've got to play my stuff back on Genelecs and other high end speakers, but they seem to be translating ok.

If you dont have a decent room, it honestly doesnt matter at all what you buy. Whatever you buy, be it $10,000 monitors or $25 monitors, you have to learn the speaker, you have to learn the amplifier it is hooked up to and you have to learn how both interact with the room. I will share this:

I mix on quested monitors and I know my control room is fully fucked. I know what I have to do to make it work.

Im sitting on a mastering session, the guy Im working with has different model questeds running off of an amp he built in a room Ive been in twice. He makes an adjustment, ab's it and I swear to fucking god I cant hear a change in the room. Ive brought in my reference CD's to play on his system and the shit makes ZERO sense to me. He knows the room, the gear, etc, and while I cant make heads or tails of what is happening in there, when I get it to my place, it sounds awesome. He's got amazing gear in a great room and I am not familiar with thhe active components nor the acoustics of the room, so it is virtually impossible for me to make a definitive decision about how this or that change in there is gonna translate to something cool on the playback systems in the acoustic environments I know.

Go to a store and try out some speakers. ALL speakers a fucked one special way or another. The thing to focus on is which you can sit in front of for the longest amount of time and really spend time trying to mate the right amplifier if you buy passive speakers. Whatever you get, however, you are really gonna need to learn and figure out how to make work. Any speaker you buy will put you in that position and considering that, you should get something that sounds good to you and screw what me, the other guy or the cookie monster says is good. The way I look at it, every time you play a mix it contributes to the destruction of your hearing, so while you are deafening yourself, you migth as well be sitting in front of a speaker that is pleasant versus sitting in front of some horrid sound box because someone on the internet said they were good to mix in front of. Go buy something that sounds nice to you that you can afford and then learn what its hyping and masking, the most expensive speakers will hype and mask this or that combined with the speed of the power amp and the integrity of the room.

the internet is for porn.

That's what I mean. They're not perfect, and I definitely know what you mean about the murkiness, but stuff translates well.

what dave said.

fwiw, i've been using the event 2020s for at least 4 years now. they're anything but flat, but at least they aren't all hyped on either the low or high end, and they're not as abrasive as ns10s. my room is also far from ideal, but i made sure to position the monitors as best i could, and like a good dork i marked the floor where my chair goes so i keep my listening position consistent. anyway, last night i was listening to the mixes for my current project on headphones for the first time and was pleasantly surprised to find that there were, in fact, no surprises. all the balances sounded pretty right on with what i've been hearing out of the monitors. so that was nice. my point being simply to reiterate what dave said...find something you like, set them up as best you can, learn what they sound like, go forth, conquer.
