Re: musician vs. engineer...wheres the cash go?
at one point I had at least 35 guitar amps.
I feel your pain man, just say no. Horrid addiction. I started building my own, that has worked out to be a pretty good cure. Good luck.

Re: musician vs. engineer...wheres the cash go?
Well, there's always that microphone that I probably really need... maybe a nice Marshall V67... no, a good RE20... no, no, an ADK for Christ's sake...
But the really serious sickness I have is ordering from office supply catalogs when they offer me a free attache case/duffel bag/lunchbox cooler. I cannot resist! I can't find the ROOM to stash any of these bags anymore and still I keep ordering more, I've got enough envelopes and printer paper and staples to last me to the next millenium...
Help me!

ryan, if you want to build an amp, go build one. Thats what I did and I sure as hell dont know anything about it. Just learn how and what in there will kill you, how to avoid being killed and then just find a commonly built amp from one of the oinline forums and go build it, big fun.

Re: musician vs. engineer...wheres the cash go?
I practically had a music store at one point.
Old Marshalls, Ac-30's, Tweed and Blackface Fenders, ect.
It's an obsession.
Now I have 1 Fender, 1 Marshall, and one little Ampeg.
I also now only have a Tele, a nice old gold top Les Paul, a jazz bass, and a nice vintage acoustic.
I can get just about any sound I need pretty easy,
and I don't need a storage space anymore.
Yeah I see what Tweed Twins and AC-30's go for now and I can't believe I sold them.
But I like the simplicity of just having what I need.

I tried building my amplifier (www.ax84.com), but half-way through it I just decided that electronics are not fun. I let a professional finish it, and I built the housing for it. It sounds alright, basically a Fender Champ with whatever changes the guy did to the circuit (www.voodooamps.com).

It's usually about only 10% of my album project rate that goes toward new gear. If I'm working daily or hourly, then I'll usually choose to eat and buy gas instead.
The gear could be amps or could be recording equipment.

My music
Re: musician vs. engineer...wheres the cash go?
I keep trying to save up for a new pair of speakers. However, I find that I need the arion SAD-3 analog delay pedal and a few mic stands, then some spare parts from digikey. That all adds up to a great shock when my wife looks at the visa bill.
I tend to reinvest most of what I make doing recording (it is a side thing from my day job). I just worked out a deal with a musician for his Trace Elliot Vellocette amp. It will be a great match for my Gibson ES-330!
It is like a never ending treasure hunt for me.

Re: musician vs. engineer...wheres the cash go?
I was always into the odd good deal, like Teiscos for $25 Silvertones for $40 ect ect. Well eventually I had all sorts of cool weirdo guitars amps pedals and such. I loved all that stuff, but I sold most of it to pay for recording gear and a couple nice old guitars and amps.
But when I see a cool piece of gear, locally, for a resonable price, man is it hard to say no.
Do you guys and gals find that there are certain items that you just can't sell, because you know, you will never find that good of a deal again?
Maybe if I was looking for Hummel figures and musical gear I could sell the Hummels and just keep all the cool gear.
