Microphone Cords
Microphone Cords
I have never really took the time to worry about the quality of what cord I used for my microphones. I am upgrading and have more money then in the past so I wanted to get peoples opinions how much a difference there is between the 10 dollar and 30 dollar mic cords you see in the stores.

Re: Microphone Cords
it depends on the manufacturer but IMO it really does make a difference when you upgrade to a quality mic cable. You get more transients because of enhanced cable properties. Higher quality cable typically equates to less resistance which increases the quality of the signal and keeps things quieter as well.
I typically use Mogami silver series for mic cables. They're not too expensive.

Re: Microphone Cords
There have been a bunch of threads on this.
I like the BLUE "kiwi" cables and the custom made, heavy guage monster cables we use at studio G. I would bring a few of those Kiwi cables with me when I track stuff elsewhere they are so good. Totally "open up" the mics.
I forget they are good until I plug something crappy into one of my mics at another studio, and it sounds duller and "blurrier" and less open.

Re: Microphone Cords
Make your own... you'll have to eventually. It seems like a pain but with higher-end cable you'll be saving money.

Yes, that sounds like a good idea. But who makes good components, as if this is any different than asking who makes good assembled cables.

Re: Microphone Cords
That would be one of those "UTFSF" questions there. Oh, okay, fine, I'll do it for you.

I personally use Mogami 2549 and Neutrik black/gold XLR connectors and I'm happy with the cables I've made, but I haven't really tried much else, either.

Yeah, the UTFSF idea was what my response was leaning towards.

Re: Microphone Cords
Read what I wrote in that first link that Gabriel provided.
And remember that friends don't let friends buy Monster cable.
There's also something to be said for using AES digital cable for microphones, and you might look into the Canare DA-206, or Apogee 'Wyde-Eye' cable.

I either use BLUE Kiwi's or Mogami (w/Neutrik connectors). I don't have the time or the desire to make my own cables.

Re: Microphone Cords
The 20 ft kewi's are on sale at musicians friends for $29... .
I've been doing drums & scratch tracks for a band over the last few days & since they paid me after day 1 I bought 3 of the kiwis. I replaced the OH's & kick cables (cheapies) with these thick devils... I wish I had em for day one.
I NEED to replace all of my cables now...

Thx for the heads up. I'll go into GC and have 'em price match. I could use a few more cables.headache9 wrote:The 20 ft kewi's are on sale at musicians friends for $29...

Anyway, I've been using Monsters and have never had a problem, but from all the negative comments I've been reading in this forum I'm beginning to wonder.
