Wow. That sucks. Pretty legendary place.

nice name dropping, Jeff. Do you really wonder where Jim Scott will work next? Really? Why do you care, I ask?

I thought someone else was buying it and renaming it "Western." Didn't they just put a new API in there in comjunction with the new ownership?

That's what I heard.
This place is always booked, so I would be really shocked to hear it's closing.

Honestly, I have no clue what you're talking about and you should really get over your hostility.

Many of these people are friends of mine. I haven't spoken to Jim in several months, but I do know that Cello was his main studio. When I was still in Los Angeles, I pretty much had an open invite to stop by whenever he was working. At one point, we even had the same manager.

When they changed the name to Cello, John Porter had told me there was some weird money situation. He came in as the 'President' of the studio or something. Candace was hired as the studio manager. I know the owner tried to get John to invest a large chunk of his own cash. Anyway, that weird situation obviously sorted itself out.

And yes, I do really wonder where Jim will end up. I know he prefers to work Neve. Maybe he'll just move across the parking lot and start inhabiting that back room at Ocean Way full time. Maybe he'll move into the 80-input room over at Bay 7. I also say this because while Jim has done the guerilla recording thing in various houses in the past- I know he's not the kind of guy to be satisfied working on a DAW.

Yeah, it's a Legacy. When I was visiting Joe Chiccarelli over Thanksgiving in LA, he was working in that room and it used to have a Neve in there. As for the ownership, I don't know what the situation is.

I have a buddy who has been recording there and he told me they had some water damage in the big rains this month, maybe there closed while they fix the place up. Or maybe they ran out of tape

That would be like Universal Studios closing or NBC just going off the air, makes no since.

Like quantegy, they had a sign on the door that said closed. I guess the owner sold the property? Im not too sure about the details.

Hopefully everyone who used to work at cello will come to the studio i'm at, and all the plans for the pool, stripers, and tiki bar will come to life. :D

I have a question about Cello while we're on the subject. I was wondering for those of you who have tracked there how you feel about the Linoleum flooring. I know Putnam had the same stuff in Chicago as well. I have hardwood, which is bright and cool, but I will possibly be building out and may use the Linoleum tiles. They seem to be fine in my control room, but I need to put a thicker finish on it...

Friggin' awesome on horns. Lively and open, not unlike the rooms at Cherokee, but a bit richer and less flutter echo. On vocals I always threw a rug down and 'made' a booth with gobo's. There's some pretty good IR's out from Cello. If you go linoleum (great... now I got that NOFX song in my head) I suggest a decent budget for gobo's and rugs too. It will make sound sculpting a lot less frustrating and enjoyable.

The last time I was there (in Jim's room), I thought the service was polite, but pretty crappy. The Neve wasn't kept up very well, and to be honest, I was surprised it was his room. Still, we made the best of it during the downtime and I played one of the better games of darts in the live room in my lifetime.
