MXL mic comments?

i got the recording pack (a 603s and a 2001) based on the tape op review and some extra research, and i'm pretty stoked on them. i've used them on all sorts of stuff (drum overheads, room mics for reverby guitars, an organ, acoustic stuff) with some good results. i haven't tried them for electric guitars, bass or vocals yet, though i hope to in the very near future. for someone like me on a shoestring budget, i think they're a great deal. with a little bit of fussing over placement (which i'd imagine is true for every mic!), they allow me to get some good sounds that i don't feel compromised on.

i have two V67G's, and i think they sound great on drums. work well as overhead, and on kick. i like em.

i have an MXL990, and am happy with it. I would be interested in hearing a matched pair.

I also enjoy my Oktavas:
mk012 - 3 capsules, modified - bright but not harsh
(2) mk219's - modfied - I like these as overheads

and my MCA SP1, also modded.

I had a mod session today, upgraded the components of the oktava mics.

not necessary, but fun

although it is a small-medium diaphragm condenser, my MCA SP1 had decent low response and a bit exaggerated presence. after the Dorsey mod, the top was smoother, well balanced, I thought it sounded "fuller" (very subjective)

the marshall 2001 + 603 pack is a motherfucking deal an a half. the 603 sounds wicked on highly distorted guitars. the pack comes with foam covers, and shock mounts for both, which come in super handy. the 2001 is pretty cool too, but i havnt experimented with it nearly as much as the 603.

What other mics would you compare the MXL 990 to?

I got the 2001/603 pack a while back. Used the 603 for snare/OH drum mic (employing the infamous Fletcher/Glyn Johns/whomever 3 mic drum technique) and the 2001 for the tom/side mic. The 603 was fantastic for everything except on one song where the hi-hat was really bashy - in which case it was just too much high. So I probablly should have used a different mic on that one. The 603 is also a great mic for acoustic guitars, esp if you're looking to layer them in a track.

The 2001 didn't excel on the drums. I also tried it as the kick/front of kit mic, and it was pretty decent. It did do really well as a vocal mic for our singer, but not for my singing - I still haven't found the mic that makes ME sound good...

I own the 2001/603 pack, and I would definatly recommend them to anyone. For the price these mics sound amazing. I have used the 2001 for overhead many times and have gotten great results. The 2001 sounds really nice on vocals also. I have used the 603 on overhead drums and acoustic guitar. The extened high end on the 603 sounded good for cymbles. It had a nice detailed sound for the acousitc aswell. I also used the 2001 for violen and the results were awesome. Tommow I'm gonna try the 603 on a snare and see how that sounds.
