Mountaintop rolling rack in a toolchest
This here's a Stanley toolchest with wheels, got it at Home Depot. Even has a cool little "Stanley" logo. Stuffed with an Alesis HD-24, a Sytek pre, Allen & Heath board... one hundred and one pounds of fun!

well, kick ass.
How did you get the rack rails in there?

I've seriously thought about how to use those things for gear storage before. I thought it might make a cool mic locker but worried the drawers were too thin. I'd also be interested in how you achieved your success!

WOW!
This is a great idea. I've used those to haul cables around in but I never thought about putting rack rails in one. Very cool, and proabably a helluva lot cheaper than a rolling rack.

And he even did the wavey thing with the faders!
Just like in the catalogs!
Total cost? Sturdiness on a scale of 1-5?
Good work.

Cool,
The only problem I can see is getting to the back of the racks.
How did you get the rack rails attached? Total cost?

Re: Mountaintop rolling rack in a toolchest
Total cost... I think the thing itself was $49, and then the additional wheels I put on the back to make trip up the stairs easier, another $10? And then I sliced a door into the bottom for access to the back, a hinge for that, hardware, the 1" x 2"s for the rack, the one challenge was the sliding rails, you need ones that extend out completely overlapping ... say $100 and change. You can drill through this kind of plastic to thread bolts through, it's very reliable and predictable, just like woodworking. I gotta hand it to Stanley, wherever he is, for making a box that's just neatly 19" wide, the man's a genius.
I've been using it for a month or so, live remotes, the thing is incredibly durable so far and easy to hoist around, and of course the beauty overall is you plug in your mics and GO!
Yeah, the faders with the wave... shades of a Sweetwater catalog...

Hey Joel -
I've been meaning to message you. I gave that sampler some listens, and I like the sounds. I could tell that maybe some of the live setups were different - like maybe some of them you had to work shorthand gear-wise, or location-wise. The jazz band stuff sounds really good.
Keep it up! Nice mobile setup by the way. That's a badass idea to use that toolchest.
jim!
