Mics on a mingus record

Post by capnreverb » Thu Feb 03, 2005 6:40 pm

I googled and ebayed to no avail.

What is an electro voice 667?
What is the story behind Capps? Albini has one, but I don't know if it's the same one on this Mingus record.

You might want to say which Charles Mingus record it is you're referring to. I hear he's got quite a few.

Ubertar likes EV mics a fair bit, if you don't get a response on this thread, might be worth PMing him.

what i find hilarious about mingus records is how good everything sounds except....the bass. it's always so low volume and gets lost so easily. isn't it ironic? don't ya think?

I think he's just being humble. I tend to do the same thing when I play bass on a record, and bass is my first instrument.

i dunno, could be, but it seems like the decision would be the engineer's, and his playing DEF. seems...emphatic.

You can hear the bass on Pithencanthrupus Erectus (sp?) just fine...

I thought they had to control the bass more stringently for vinyl...

Mingus at Antibes '60

Totally amazing, I'm pretty sure it's a legit release-it sounds great.

Since this has digressed into a Mingus fav album thread, the greatest Mingus record ever is "Mingus Presents Mingus". How 4 guys can sound like a big band is beyond me. Be weary of cheap candid reissues, they sound like they were mastered through a bag of cotton.

His first 10" on Debut "strings and keys" is nice and not well known. I also like his paino record.

But, in the end, its "Mingus Presents Mingus".

In an unrelated turn, Lee Konit'z "Motion" might be up there with one of the greatest forgotten jazz albums ever.
