DBX 118 Question

Post by tylerbcrawford » Sat Feb 05, 2005 9:19 am

This guy on ebay claims to own some dbx calibration equipment for calibrating the 118 so it is just like the 160. Think it's just a crock?

Even if it's true, I'm not paying $150 plus shipping... not now, at least...
he took a duck in the face at two and hundred fifty knots.

that's interesting...i wonder what's up with this...i've used both...all the dbx stuff actually...i don't think the 118 is the same at all...but i'm curious...it is a cool 'comp'

the main place to go for service is

www.musicianservice.com

they may be able to fill you in. so could tom cram @ dbx. he's nice in his emails.

out to the saturday,
Mike

In my opinion, a calibration service _only_ of a 118 (119 etc) is not worth the money and will not "produce the same results as the 160 for a lot less money." (quotes from ebay page)

I worked for David Blackmer (dbx founder) from '80 to 1993 and know a little about his VCAs, RMSs and the circuits they found their way into. Converting a 118 into a 160 is a topology change, not a calibration tweak.

Anyone considering this service would be better off spending the money to recap the electrolytics or just enjoy it as a flavor-of-the-month compressor.

by the way, its somewhat disengenuous to suggest that dbx's text equipment was not up to snuff and better results can now be achieved with digital test equipment.
