I have noticed lately that on some networks, programs are at "normal volume, but when the commercials come I have to fumble with the remote to quickly turn the volume dow like 8 decibels. What's the deal? anyone in broadcasting have any idea why? Besides the obvious, "we want you hearing those commercials even if you leave the room!" answer.

the loudness wars on big label records completely took their cue from broadcast televesion, that shit has been going on forever. The FCC was established to monitor and regulate broadcast standards, but somehow they are more concerned with whose boob pops out and who says fuck to be concerned about the standards the comission was establish to enforce. Put a limiter on your tv.

This absolutely annoys the hell out of me. I've been planning to do the limiter thing once I get a decent entertainment system. It's really annoying late at night when you're trying to watch something and not wake other people up.

Word. My wife notices and starts yelling robotically "YES....I WILL BUY ONE NOW, THANK YOU." That's what I thought at first, they were pulling down the program but I figured the commercials were actually what got louder. I think I notice most darmatically on FOX. King of the Hill and Malcom in the MIddle.

The movie Jackie Brown has really loud music and much quieter talking, so I ran an RNC between the VCR and the TV and it was AOK - any unbalanced compressor/limiter should do the trick.

Obnoxiously loud and images-moving-too-quickly commercials are one of the primary reasons I no longer watch television, let alone the piss poor programming.

Soundguy mentioned using a limiter in another post about movies being "really loud". Never thought about that...it would be nice while watching DVDs. I second the question MT had: any limiter at all or a particular model for this device?
