ADAT equivalent

Post by bellulah » Thu Feb 10, 2005 2:50 am

hey - i'm tired of the moving parts and hassle of the ADAT. what's the best equivalent? by equivalent, i mean:

- uncompressed 16-bit or even 20-bit recording
- 8 tracks simultaneous
- three band parametric eq

i know ADAT don't have the eq, but i assume anything in my price range and being similar to this setup would be some sort of DAW, so i threw that in there.

it could be more than 8-tracks too, like i am gonna look more into the aw16g. but i am alos working with monetary contraints too. the tascam dp01fx looked cool, but only 2 tracks simultaneous.

just wondering if anyone has any suggestions!! also need a suggestion whether or not i should try to sell an ADAT with 1100 some odd head hours on it, or if i should just squeeze the life out of it until it dies. thanks a ton for any help!!

Alesis HD 24, if you like the adat, you'll love the HD 24. No daw necessary.
You probably can't get much out the adat, and you can dump all your projects over to HD 24 very easily, and add to, or edit them much easier than with adat. The two machines are very compatible.
Keep the adat at least until you move your projects over to whataever you decide to get.
Good Luck

Or how 'bout the Alesis HD-8, for something like $650? I'd get one, just to have the convenience of something slightly smaller for simpler gigs. Gods of Alesis...hear and answer!

I think you'd be very happy with an HD24. You can even sync up the HD24 with your existing ADAT if you wanted to go there. At least transfering tracks should be pretty easy.

The converters are great, the operating system is pretty bulletproof, and you can use pretty much any current IDE drive. The construction is pretty road-worthy, although you may want to transport the drive caddies separate from a road case.

One thing you'll find is that when you go to the 8 simultaneous input tracks, that pretty much eliminates all of the cheaper all-in-one boxes (i.e. sub-$1000).

Check out the Akai box--the DPS1200 or whatever it is. They just upgraded it recently and have a newer version out, but it's one of the coolest, simplest all-in-one boxes out there. It's pretty esy to use if you understand signal flow and it sounds nice. If you're used to ADATs, you'll love it. Cheaper than the Yamaha stuff even when it was new.

his "100 Songs..." sounds pretty damned good, btw!

I love my Korg D1200 (they make the D1600 for not much more $). Plus, I learned everything I know on it from a super-rad user forum: korgstudios.com. Korg D1200 costs $850 brand new, and that includes a cd burner.

Any Tascam 2488 users out there? Curious what people think of it.... I almost picked it up instead of the HD24.

Yes, this is the actual unit I used to record and mix that CD.
