You could always setup a little 3 watt (under FCC license limit) FM transmitter and patch to it when you are ready to run out and check it out in the car. Maybe hook up an orban optimod so you can really tell what it would sound like on the radio..
Or, you can get to know a pair of monitors really well, and trust your own judgement and experiance with them. After hearing ONE muddy mix I would know to chill a little on the low end.
I used to check mixes i outside the studio a lot, and I would A/B to CD's a lot, and I dont really find myself doing that anymore, unless i just need a break anyway, then i will listen to something else, quietly for a few minutes....
I really feel like knowing your monitors and environment is truly the most economical way to make your mixes sound better. You are in charge of all that mud....
