AKG C1000

Post by mfedderman » Tue Aug 12, 2003 10:55 pm

Hey All,

I am just trying to get a feel good AND bad on the AKG C1000 mic. I bought a factory matched pair, and am curious for more real world info on the mic before I open them. Please, tell me your thoughts good AND bad!

I'm assuming that you are going to get some rather hateful comments regarding the C1000's, however they were some of the first condensers I owned (they were affordable......like $300 for a pair) and I've used them on on damn near everything. They are fairly acceptable on overheads....you can get good guitar cab sounds....hate them on vocals.....suck as room mics....but rather useful none the less. I would never get rid of mine, and because they are cheap....I'm not afraid to stick them in places I wouldn't want to risk a nicer mic.

For whatever the reason my C1000S, which I didn't even buy for studio use, gets more use than several mics I own that are theoretically "better." I like it for guitar cabs, and use it for hi-hat when I'm doing funk or groove oriented music.

It taking batteries is good too. If you're out doing field crap and whatnot, I mean.

i love the c1000. i use it religiously on guitar cabs (in conjunction with a 414) and hihats, and it always give me what i need. for being so cheap, it really is an awesome mic. also makes a good overhead. sucks on vocals, imo (not enough size, kind of airy and brittle). but an awesome all around mic other than that.

I like it as a "variance" mic., when I want to vary the sound. For example, if I am layering acoustic parts, I'll mic. one with the C1000S. Or I'll do a backing vocal with it instead of my prime vocal mic.

Of course, you should know that my other choices are cheap LD's and an SM58 and some '57 copies..

the c1000 gets blasted around here regularly, but i use mine frequently on guitar cabs. it's often the first mic i put up, and it's often the last mic standing. it has other uses for sure, but i really dig it on guitars...

Which is why I ignored the negative press and bought one. I learned I rather like it for certain things...

I recently set up about 10 mics all in a row, same pre's and settings.
A couple suprises:

the Nuemann 103 was quite dark. Nice and smooth w/ great mids&bass.
Hot output.

the c1000 was midrangey, sounded smaller.

the Rode nt1 was very bright, and high output. Not alot of lows.

the CAD e100 was big, round and high output, smooth in the mids and lows, reminded me of radio broadcast sound.

Anyways, it was fun and i learned alot. The c1000 is a good mic for acoustic gtr- nice articulate mids and highs and it's rolloff at 200Hz keeps the body from booming. Also works good on percussion- some other lg. condensors sound brittle or crunchy on tambourines or shakers- the c1000 seems a little more reserved. I used it last week on a rocking piano part and it worked beautifully.

I use my C1000s regularly with a female vocalist. The low end really complements her deep voice. I've compared it to other condensers, but we can never get a tone which we are happy with.

i dont usually get great low end out of the c1000. perhaps because her voice is in a higher range, her low end is more midrangey? this mic has always been about the presence and air for me, so its interesting to see someone use it in a completely opposite fashion.

I had a pair of the older dark bodied C-1000's and sold them.
I kick myself every time I think about it.
They were very multi-purpose and used them a such.
I used them to record low-brass and the sound was outstanding.

Hey gang,

Wow! THe feedback I got was overwhelmingly positive. I also expected the mic to get slammed! Everyone's comments makes me glad I bought them!

Yes, but you be the judge:

It's not the ultimate mic tone, but it's decent...
